New Allergy Collaborative to Focus on Food Allergies

The newly formed International Collaboration in Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (ICAALL) will focus first on food allergies, members of the group recently announced. According to Medscape, the group plans to address the growing prevalence of food allergies, including research into the symptoms, history, diagnosis, and treatment of allergies.

The group includes contributors from around the world, enabling it to address food allergy topics from a global perspective. Dr. Wesley Burks, Chief of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Duke University and president-elect of the AAAAI, spoke about the new initiative while noting that food allergy rates have increased significantly around the globe in the past decade. "In all parts of the world, diagnosis of food allergy remains cumbersome, and treatment incomplete,” he said. “What you'd really like is an active treatment to make it permanently go away.”

In a statement, the ICAALL said "Diagnostic assays need much better predictability, and we need to understand better the genetics of the disease, as well as the epidemiologic factors." These are just some of the areas of research ICAALL members plan to focus on. The new initiative was announced last week at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI).
