Food in Skincare Products Could Be Linked To Allergy Development

Two case studies are showing a possible link between food allergies and skincare products containing foods as their primary ingredients. The increased use of natural, food-based products in cosmetics and homemade skincare products could be linked to the increase in some food allergies, researchers contend.

The first study, conducted in 2014, demonstrated both clinical and laboratory evidence of a link between cosmetics and food allergy to goats milk. The study was conducted by Professor Robyn O'Hehir, Director of Allergy, Immunology and Respiratory Medicine at the Alfred and Monash University. The study included topical products utilizing goats milk.

A new case study, just published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice from Professor O'Hehir linked a patient's allergy to oats with the use of oat-based skincare products. Many of the "natural product" creames on the market utilize oats as a base. When rubbed into sensitive or damaged skin, they can cause a reaction.

“Surprisingly, some of these products contain foods which are known to cause allergy. Goat’s milk, cow’s milk, nut oils and oats are common ingredients in ‘natural’ cosmetics. While unlikely to be a problem for most people, repeated application of these to broken or eczematous skin may lead to a severe allergic reaction when the food is next eaten,” Professor O’Hehir said.

O'Hehir cites other studies in which wheat in soap has also been liked to some allergies.

“This new study adds extra evidence to the argument for skin care preparations to be bland and to avoid agents capable of sensitisation, especially foods,” Professor O’Hehir said.
