Food Allergy Policies of Theme Parks Across America

Plenty of families are planning exciting trips to theme parks across the U.S. this summer, seeking thrills and adventure. But for those with food allergies, amusement parks can be a major problem.

We’ve researched the food allergy policies of the most popular theme parks in the U.S. so that you can have a fun and stress-free experience!

Disney Parks

Disney parks, including the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, go above and beyond to assist guests with peanut and other food allergies.

Restaurants can accommodate a variety of food allergies including gluten or wheat, lactose or dairy, peanuts and tree nuts, shellfish, soy, fish, eggs, and corn. Guests can inform the kitchen when they make a reservation at one of the park’s restaurants and can speak with a chef or the restaurant manager once they arrive at the dining facility.

Those with metabolic disorders, PKU, multiple allergies, or an allergy not listed above can contact the Disneyland Resort at DLRSpecialDiets@email.disney.com or the Walt Disney World Resort at Special.Diets@email.DisneyWorld.com two weeks before arriving and after booking all dining arrangements for their entire trip.

Their website states that Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will do their best to prevent cross-contamination and to accommodate those with peanut allergies. However, they do not use separate kitchens to prepare allergen-free items. Also, be cautious when eating at food stands, bakeries and candy stores, and make sure to check labels or ask one of the Disney employees if you are unsure whether a certain product contains peanuts or other allergens.

Guests staying at one of the Disney Resort hotels can ask the front desk to have a refrigerator placed in their room. Furthermore, those with special medication, food and Epipens can inform Disney employees when entering the Park and will be allowed to bring these items with them.

Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort has a variety of different dining locations that can accommodate the needs of those with food allergies. They advise guests to plan in advance before making a trip. Guests can look at online menus before making a reservation at any of the dining facilities.

If you are unable to plan in advance, Universal Orlando encourages guests to speak with the chef or restaurant manager once they arrive at a dining facility. The culinary staff will do their best to prevent cross-contamination and to make sure those with food allergies have an enjoyable and safe dining experience.

The Universal Orlando Resort also allows guests to bring their own food with them into the park. You can simply notify a member of the security team that you have a food allergy or intolerance. Furthermore, those staying at one of the on-site hotels can ask for a refrigerator to be placed in their room for a charge of $15 per day.

Those with additional questions can send an email to FoodServiceCUF@universalorlando.com.

Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood states on their website that they “will use reasonable efforts to prevent the introduction of the allergen of concern into the food through close attention during our sourcing, preparation, and handling processes.” However, they also remind guests that it is ultimately their responsibility to make the decision of whether to order a specific item at one of their dining facilities. They cannot guarantee that allergens haven’t been introduced into the food.

Universal Studios also offers a dietary food guide that lists which dining facilities offer Kosher Dining, gluten-free dining, and vegetarian dining options.

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld has partnered with FAAN, the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, to train and educate all members of their staff in allergen management to ensure guest safety. SeaWorld suggests that you go immediately to the cashier at a dining facility and ask to talk to a supervisor so that the rest of the staff can know about your allergens and so you can choose a safe meal.

Their website also offers an Allergen Chef Card, which you can print out at home. Simply fill out this Allergen Chef Card with any food allergies you have and then present the card to the supervisor or chef at any restaurant you choose to dine at. The Chef Card is a very helpful tool that allows the chef to be reminded of your allergies so that you can be protected.

Sea World also offers a variety of prepackaged food items that are allergen friendly. To see a list of these items and where you can find them, you can speak with a supervisor at one of the meal facilities within the park.
