Most Common Food Allergen Reactions And How To Control Them

A couple of the most common reactions to a food allergen are hives and itching. The itching can be mild to severe. Luckily, there are ways to control it.

Antihistamines

Use an over-the-counter antihistamine like Benadryl. This medication acts by blocking the effect of histamine, ergo the name. Histamine is a naturally occurring compound in the body which causes redness and swelling to happen, resulting in an itch that must be scratched. Benadryl and the like can cause drowsiness, so be mindful of what you are doing after taking the medication.

Calamine Lotion

You can apply this classic pink lotion to your skin in the areas where you itch. It can soothe and cool your skin, providing immediate relief. A gentle massage doesn’t hurt either. Use about twice a day as necessary.

Simple Moisturizing Lotion

Really simple with no perfumes or alcohol. Ones with menthol can be especially soothing. The active ingredients in a menthol lotion will work to cool irritated skin and relieve severe itching. These lotions can also moisturize to prevent drying and cracking. Apply at night to relieve nighttime itching, which can disturb restorative sleep.

Ice Packs

Ice packs applied to severely itchy and irritated skin can provide immediate relief. The coldness will create an immediate, distracting sensation, which will keep your mind away from thinking scratchy thoughts. In addition, the cold will reduce swelling that causes itching. If the cold packs “sweat” and your skin becomes damp, be sure to dry it right away and moisturize. Damp skin, once dry, can cause itching all by itself.
