No. You're just like all of us moms. You second guess, change your mind, ask tons of questions...you know what I mean. Are you being too crazy? Heck no, but then again, we all get a little crazy!

I don't think you are being crazy at all, just cautious. Many of us here at the site make our own ice cream or are limited to one or a couple of brands that we are comfortable with. Who hasn't found a stray nut in ice cream at some point in their life? I know I have as a child.

I don't thing you are crazy, especially since Kevin developed hives while eating Haagen-Dazs Dulce de Leche this week. (The story is on the Manufacturer's Forum.) He's had it at least a million times before this, and they certainly have a rigorous cleaning process. S%*# happens, and we don't want our kids to be on the receiving end of it.

I've decided that my 3 year old shall never have store bought ice cream again. Unless, of course, we find a peanut/tree nut free one. It seems nearly every week another brand and flavor of ice cream is recalled because of nut contamination. I just posted a recall of Friendly's ice cream in the Alert forum. That was the last straw for us. From now on, it is either homemade ice cream or my local Dairy Joy (which is unfortunately only open in the summer).

My son eats vanilla only, Breyer's and Dean's. Also, Dean's ice cream sandwiches. I avoid store brands. So far so good. I realize there's a small risk, but I think that's true of nearly all processed foods, especially cookies, crackers, breads, ice cream.
I think we tend to be most conservative with foods we've had problems with in the past. Hives after eating ice cream would make me rethink my position. So far, my son's mysterious reactions have been after eating whole grain breads, so we no longer let him eat that--we stick with white bread for him (yuck!). Since we've never had a problem with ice cream I can't see eliminating it at this point.

The only ice cream I feel comfortable with is Ben & Jerry's. They are extremely picky about all their ingredients, and label even when certain flavors are made on the same lines as other flavors that contain peanuts! And their ice cream is THE best!

I have read many people saying Ben & Jerry's is safe... however, last night in the store I saw a flavour of Ben & Jerry's called New York Chunky Fudge, or something like that, containing almonds, pecans, walnuts and peanut oil. I would be nervous if this flavour was made on the same equipment as other flavours as there could be a risk of cross-contamination. That is why Nestle Canada says none of their ice cream is safe (it is all labelled may contain peanut traces). I doubt they have a dedicated line for this flavour but I will try to contact Ben & Jerry's to see if there are dedicated lines for non-nut ice creams.. does anyone know?

Our son is TNA and egg and dairy allergic. He loves and has done VERY WELL without any reactions ever to SOY ice cream products. I have not called the companies but have read the labels and have not checked on peanuts. But these products are worth exploring ---they are sooooo good and better than dairy ice cream!

We buy it from Wellspring (fresh fields) etc.
