Any luck in Florida?

Good morning everyone! As usual, I am on this website instead of doing my job. My question this morning is this: Are there any posters here from Florida? I may be relocating to the Sanford/Lake Mary region. I have the names and numbers of all the preschools and elementary schools, but I thought I'd ask here first and save myself a little money. Any luck with the schools in that region with regards to protecting children with nut allergies (not necessarily bans)?

Hi,
I dont have a deffinate answer for you, I am in Michigan. But just the other day I was in a chat room and mentioned my son's PA and another chatter told me that in Flordia the schools are not permitted to serve peanut products. I do not know if this is a fact or just a misunderstanding, but it may be worth looking into.

Thank you Shannon. I really don't want to relocate, but if there is any truth to that rumor, I'll jump on the plane tonight.

My sister is a teacher in Florida. We've had a few discussions about allegies and schools. In her district/county, they are NOT peanut free. In fact, I was suprised to learn that she has known of very few food allergic kids through the years.

Oops, I should have read the Shannon's post more clearly. I don't know about the "serving" of peanut products, but they can bring peanut products from home. I will ask my sister about this.

I live in Florida, not in the region that you are talking about moving to, but am familiar enough with the education department to know that if you bring you child here, you will be doing all the foot-work yourself...they are NOT peanut-free here...and your child will be an oddity for having this allergy. My son has a PA; we known since he was 9 months old-but the schools have been difficult. We actually changed schools this year to see if we could get more response. Last year, he had to bring everything from lunch, to snacks, to his own party favors,(I don't mind-to keep him safe), but he felt akward. Also, they refused to let him come to school on a day in which the school nurse was absent, and they wil not let the epi-pen come into the classroom with him-it must stay in the clinic. This year looks to be better, but time will tell...

jackki,
How terrible! I almost understand not letting a child carry the pen on them (although I disagree strongly), but to have it locked away in the clinic? That is just plain reckless. I had a feeling in the back of my head that the South was going to be a challenge with regards to pa. When I go down visiting, all I can see are boiled peanuts for sale. In malls, grocery stores, gas stations...Nasty, drippy peanuts all over the place.
Anyway, thank you all for your input. It looks like I have some phone calls to make.

Hey! Im 13 and in Florida. In my particular schools, I havent really had any problems w/ my allergies, but then again I almost always pack a lunch. My teachers have been pretty good about it, I even had one that asked me if I could eat a certain brand of pizza before a pizza party. Other schools would be different, but thats just my experiences. Bye!

Thanks for the input Robin! I'm glad to hear it hasn't been too difficult for you in Florida schools. I hope to hear from you some more on this website. It's good to hear a fresh perspective.

I really didn't want to post to this topic before because I thought it might come across as unkind. I've lived in Florida just about all my life in four different areas. I was just recently in Sanford and I just want to mention that as far as somewhat backwards, this place is it. There are a lot of newer areas in the Lake Mary area though. I don't know if you could check out the Orlando area and see what they have as far as food allergy protocol in schools. The Seminole County public school system has a web site that you could access and e-mail questions to. Good luck and let us know if you move. (I live on the west coast now but lived in Orlando and East Central coast and south Florida)

I just looked up the Seminole County public school website and clicked on the food services site, but they didn't mention anything about food allergies. The website address is www.scps.k12.fl.us/site/site.html
I love Florida and don't feel like peanuts are everywhere I turn. I haven't seen any grocery stores, Walmarts, etc. that have open bins of peanuts or other nuts out like I have read about in other areas. Give Florida a chance! It is a great state!
