BBQ smoking wood chips

My son has an allergy to all nuts. He has successfully
Lived with this allergy for 9 yrs. he is very sensitive
A 100 on the blood tests. We recently purchased
A BBQ smoker. We have not ventured to wood chips
Yet as many brands have pecan flavored, etc
And we worry. Should we worry that an apple wood
Chip could pose a threat? I read that hickory is
Related to the tree nut ?

We asked our allergist the same thing. He wasn't sure. But since there are so many "flavors" to wood chips, he suggested we avoid pecan, hickory or the tree nut woods. We usually used mesquite. Even now the TN allergy is outgrown, we still prefer it.
Look up "smoking packets" on the internet. They can give you that smoked taste, but you control the ingredients.

The key is to soak the wood. We use fewer chips, but add herbs like rosemary and oregano fresh from the garden. Or, spices from the cabinet.
