Hi, I am new to the site and I have a question about peanut shells in potted plant soil.

I was about to buy a dill plant by Sara's Superb Herbs today and as I was picking it up, I noticed that there were peanut shells in the soil. I checked the other pots, and sure enough, they also had peanut shells mixed in the soil. I was horrified because this is food and my son reacts to peanut shells as well as the peanuts themselves. I asked the workers and they said that they would be surprised if anyone would have a reaction to composted shells, so they weren't much help. Actually these shells were about an inch long and were not decomposed. Does anyone know if edible plants are required to have labeling if they are grown in soil that contains peanuts? I emailed Sara's Superb Herbs and am waiting to hear from them. My son used to help me in the garden and now that is just another thing he wont be allowed to do.

Thanks for your help

Question of the Week: Answered!
Every week, PeanutAllergy.com is answering one of the questions posted in our community.
Our Answer:
Peanuts can show up in all sorts of unexpected places. (You can learn more about that here.)
Unfortunately, potting soil is one of those places. Peanut and tree nut shells are used to aerate the soil and can cause allergic reactions. Although the amount varies among different soil brands, the presence of these shells is enough to cause concern.
We did some research and found a few brands that claim to be peanut-free: Fafard Potting Mix, Lambert 100% Organic Potting Soil, and Schultz Potting Soil.
Because peanut shells are found in so many different soils and are hard to detect in the product, you need to take extra precautions. Make sure to ask the manufacturer of the soil you are buying if there are shells in the mulch.
If you have to buy soil that contains these shells, we suggest wearing gloves when handling it and keeping your child away from it.
We asked our Facebook community what they thought, and they answered here.

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for posting this - we are so careful about avoiding peanut and this is a new one to me! My son and I love to garden together - he even has his own "crops" he planted himself and I never knew I needed to be looking for peanut warnings on freakin' soil bags too! Aaarrggghhhh! Oh well, good to know - thank you so much! :)
