I've had my peanut allergy since I was little and have heard many rules about what I can and can't eat. As far as I know, I've never had a reaction to any cashews, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, or what have you. Would it be safe for me to start adding tree nuts to my diet? Can I test myself at home? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Question of the Week: Answered!
Every week, PeanutAllergy.com is answering one of the questions posted in our community.
Our Answer:
As you and others living with a peanut allergy know, peanuts are actually legumes and not nuts. According to food allergy expert Dr. Hugh Samson, cross-reaction is not likely, but it may be best to avoid tree nuts nonetheless.
Food Allergy Research and Education estimates that 25-40 percent of people who have peanut allergy are also allergic to tree nuts.
If you are not allergic to tree nuts, be cautious when consuming them; they may have been processed on the same equipment as products that contain peanuts.

We do not recommend testing yourself at home as it may not be safe. Speak with your allergist about getting tested to determine your food allergies.

My son has a severe peanut allergy since 2 1/2 and we were told to keep him away from tree nuts
we were afraid he would be allergic now that he is 17 he is now not only anaphylaxis to peanuts he is the same to tree nuts and egg whites. So my advice is get tested for tree nuts or keep staying away from them because you never know. good luck

My son has a peanut and shellfish allergy. We avoid tree nuts because of the cross contamination risk with peanuts. He has tested negative to tree nuts. But since he never has actually eaten a tree nut we can't be sure. Check with an allergist before trying anything at home. It is not worth the risk.
Good luck

My son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy when he was 18 months. He is now 7. He was tested for tree nuts also and is not allergic to them. He eats tree nuts manufactured in peanut free facilities. There are a couple brands out there that I know of. He also eats almond butter and a hazelnut spread that are both made in a peanut free facility. I would definitely discuss with your doctor before trying any tree nuts.

I am allergic to peanuts and all tree nuts EXCEPT walnuts. I don't know why or how. I am just glad. But I am still very careful because it is almost impossible to find walnuts that do not share manufacturing facilities with other tree nuts and/or peanuts.
If I were you, I would proceed cautiously if you want to try eating tree nuts. Also realize that you may be able to eat one kind of tree nut but not another.
