Kraft is really changing their labeling

The following is an email I received from Kraft regarding their labeling policy. I have been conversing (through email) with a person high up at Kraft. They are going to start labeling for may contain and making the allergens in bold letters. I am sooooo happy. Enjoy the response.

Hi Jodi,

I am pleased to respond to your recent email addressed to Irene Rosenfeld, the CEO of Kraft Foods. As you know, the issue of food allergens is among our top priorities at Kraft, and we strive to improve the clarity of the allergen information on our labels. To that end, we are in the process of implementing changes to our labeling that will provide consumers with additional ways to easily identify potential allergens in our products. This may take the form of either bold lettering in the ingredient statement to identify an allergen in the product (with corresponding bold lettering of the "may contain"-type statements that may be found on such products as well) or through the consolidation of allergen and cross-contact information in a single location adjacent to, but separate from, the ingredient line, depending on the product and size of the label.

We expect to begin implementing these label changes this year. However, given the vast number of products that we produce, it may take us several years to completely implement these changes.

Also, we would like to clarify our policy on cross contact labeling so that you can continue to purchase Kraft products with confidence. When a product is made on shared equipment, stringent cleaning and sanitation practices and other precautions are taken to prevent the unintended introduction of a life-threatening allergen into a product that is not supposed to be there.

We know that some people may be very sensitive to even minor traces of an allergen and understand concern about potential carryover between products that are manufactured on shared equipment. If the presence of trace amounts of one of these allergens, like peanuts, may be unavoidable despite all these precautions, we label the product as follows:


Our labeling informs consumers clearly about the potential carryover and the exact allergen that may be present. However, we believe that this type of "may contain" labeling should be used judiciously -- only when an allergen could be present despite all precautions to prevent it. Also, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises that "may contain" labeling should not be used in place of good manufacturing practices that include cleaning of equipment.

I'm glad they're improving their labeling but I wonder now how many foods we've been using that are on shared lines that are "thoroughly cleaned" between runs and have never caused a problem (with us, anyway) will now be unsafe due to may contain warnings.

Sounds promising- that's what I have said before on another thread...provide me the information so that the informed choice is mine whether or not to use a product-Full disclosure. Period. But the choice needs to be mine.

Well, I don't really see any difference in what that email says and what we've all been told from them for ages. It says that they will clean and then if they still feel there is a risk they will label for x-contam. It does not say that they will always label for shared lines. To me, that is exactly the same company line they've always taken. They don't say they are changing how they label for x-contam. They only say that they will place it somewhere that it is visible when they do label.
Now, adding bolding, etc. is an improvement and a change. THat is clearly stated.
The lawyer in me says that this is P.R. work to make it sound good, but the words do not indicate they Kraft is going to start always labeling for shared lines, only when they feel that the cleaning is not enough. And this is the same policy I understand they've had for years.

Thanks, pitterpat. That's exactly what I read into it as well. They have always maintained that they [i]WOULD[/i] apply warning labels...[i]IF [b]they[/b] felt there was a [b]'real'[/b] risk...[/i]
What I want (and don't think is unreasonable) is for them to let ME make that decision. General Mills does.

I have posted several times about my distrust for Kraft for the exact reasons stated above.
If something is run on lines with peanuts it is not in my comfort zone. EVEN with an allergy wash.

I'm not ALWAYS in agreement with that statement... But, I had to point out that I don't like Kraft very much, but I forget why [img][/img]
Might be the 'But we clean the lines, so its safe' motto... It probably is. What if its not.
I had a tough time getting an answer from Kraft (OM Hotdogs) and by the time I did, it was too late....
