I received this interesting email from a support group in NJ. I have never given my DS straight up coconut. He has eaten stuff with coconut oils in it. Anyone have problems with it?
Here is the email...
FDA has recently added Coconut to Tree Nut Listing. The following is shared by NY Support Groups:
I have been discussing the coconut labeling issue for a while with FAAN. I did not know my son was allergic to coconut until he reacted and we wound up in the hospital. Coconut oil is used in alot of products, always a debate if it was a tree nut, never classified that way and Kellog is so good about labeling I trused them and read to the bottom about no tree nuts and had a problem with froot loops (using coconut oil). Many products use coconut oil...and alot of children who have a tree nut allergy do not have a coconut allergy...I had a whole discussion about this with my sons allergist (Dr. Sicherer) Baby cakes uses coconut oil in alot of their products. Thanks for the information on the flour, this is all very helpful.
FYI- HI! I was online yesterday printing out the
My son has had coconut flakes before with no problem although he doesnt like them so its not often. Interesting though.
Thank you very much for sharing this. I didn't know it was actually classified as a tree nut now. Our allergist recently told us to avoid coconut, and we've kind of debated since coconut oil is in so many things. My son tested level 5 to peanuts and slightly positive to cashews and almonds. He has not been tested for coconut, but allergist said to avoid. I also asked about shea nut, and he said not enough is known about that yet for him to give me a clear recommendation.
Those of us with PA are usually told by our allergists to avoid tree nuts. So does this mean that we should also avoid coconut?
I can understand avoiding tree nuts because of the danger of cross contamination and the fact that many with PA are also allergic to a tree nut. Does this mean we have a greater chance of being allergic to coconut?
And, does this mean that something with coconut in it could say, 'contains tree nuts'?

To find the list of things to avoid, go to www.foodallergy.org Then click on common allergens. Look at the top of the page toward the right side and see the word downloads. Click on "downloads" and then you will find the list of things to avoid (how to read a label). Click on that. Then you have to scroll down to find tree nuts on the list.
FAAN explained the additions to their list in the last newsletter. I don't think I can quote it here...copyright issues?
I can tell you they suggest people contact their allergist to see if they should avoid coconut.

DD - allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, coconut, and egg
Just told my pa son about the new classification on coconut and he reminded me about the coconut patties from Disney he eats all the time. The box states Made in a Nut Free Facilty...Gluten Free
Guess they will have to change the labeling for that now...
I totally forgot about those cookies. we bought so many boxes when we went. he is down to his last 2 and they expire tomorrow, dh said he will take expired boxes to work and eat them lol
I've just started a thread on the main topic board support FDA's decision. I think that casting the net of FALCPA's protection to include those with coconut allergies is a great thing, and worth the initial confusion and inconvenience.
