RE: Wal-Mart Great Value Brand French Cut Green Beans!!

Hadn't purchased these in months.

Bought 3 bags this past week & just opened one tonight. Was at end of 3-hour grocery extravaganza when these went into basket, so I DID NOT RE-READ ingredients.

Tonight I turned over bag to read instructions because I couldn't recall how long to cook.

The words "Allergy Statement" caught my eye -- never there before when I'd bought these. Only ever said "Ingredients: Green Beans"!!

Here's what's on the bag NOW:

Allergy Warning:
Manufactured in a facility that processes milk, eggs, shrimp, almonds, cashews, peanuts, wheat, soybeans.

I will also post this in the "Unexpected" thread.

To everyone here, I say: please re-read & ALWAYS read the ingredients & allergy statements on EVERY food item you intend to feed allergic person.

You just never know.

I've always assumed there was some cross-contamination risk with legumes, likely soy with peanut. But to finally see it in print on a bag of frozen green beans gives me chills.

And I've been doing this PA thing with DS for 7+ years.

How 'bout those "mystery" reactions from other legumes?

GGA.

Excuse typos, interrupted dinner to post this here.

First, thanks for the heads up!!
I must say Wal-Mart is getting really awful on their labelings lately...I have noticed these labelings virtually on every peanut or non-peanut food items.
It is getting ridiculous! Kraft does a better job than Wal-Mart. I believe they are taking short-cuts...short-cuts that are affecting my labeling shopping with Wal-Mart.
I will spend an extra buck or two just to be on the safe side. Just my opinion.

Heads up! This type of overkill allergen warning label is also appearing on Kirkland Signature brand foods (Costco house brand). The hot BBQ chicken I used to pick up for dinner (the one cooked in store) now has this warning label on it.
I suspect liability issues -why else would the warning cover just about every major allergen?

I noticed the same thing at Costco and won`t buy food there. I notice that a lot of their food has a may contain for almost all of the top 8. I don`t believe that each item is cross contaminated with all these allergens. It is just laziness on their part to figure out what it really is or is not cross contaminated with. There is no way to know, so I don`t shop there.

One of the really frustrating things for me is the fact that our PA son has had a number of "mystery" reactions to frozen vegetables over the years.
I often buy Great Value brand.
This just peeves me to no end.
And I definitely have just crossed off Great Value vegetables.

I saw this months ago and could not believe it! DD is also allergic to green beans so we are avoiding all beans. I try to just buy fresh veggies now.

It's not surprising. Haven't you noticed how many different varieties of frozen veggie dishes there are now? Green beans almondine, stir fry mixes with noodles & sauce, broccoli with cheese sauce, etc.

I have MFA and have reacted to frozen Birds Eye spinach and other frozen and canned veggies. The only ones I don't react to so far is frozen (Birds Eye) and (Green Giant) corn and peas. I try not to eat too much peas for fear of becoming allergic to them and I think I'm allergic to green beans but then who knows, it could have been cross contaminated. So confusing.
Didn't someone post something about Birds Eye frozen veggies that may contain shellfish? I'm allergic to shellfish. I also stay away from Tuna because I think it may be contaminated with shellfish too because sometimes when I eat it I'm fine and other times I'm not.

There is a brand here in Texas that I've seen at our HEB (ack, can't remember the name) that is basically "down home southern cooking" veggies in cans. Thought they looked really good - love a good greens with bacon - but when I read the cans they are ALL may contain PN's. Apparently they must make boiled PN's also. So much for that.

Thanks for the heads up! I've also started noticing small mystery reactions to veggies lately. I thought she might be developing an allergy to all legumes. Hmmm...
I was surprised a few months ago when I saw a may contain warning on Trader Joe bagged lettuce.
Guess it goes to show, we really do have to double check EVERYTHING!
