pYesterday, we went out to eat and after talking with the manager settled on a few safe items for Matt to eat. At least, we thought they were safe. About 15min into the meal (pizza, mashed potatoes, and green beans) the area around his mouth turned bright red. I gave him a tsp of Benadryl and within 30-40min the redness was gone. About 7hrs later, when I was getting him ready for bed, I noticed he was COVERED head to toe in little red dots. There are a couple of areas that are just red patches. These aren't the red blotches (hives) he's had in the past. They do itch a little, but he has no fever, and lots of energy still. I gave him another tsp of Benadryl last night, but it did nothing to get rid of the red dots. My husband swears up and down that he has measles, but I thought you had to have a fever with measles. /p
pMy first thought was a biphasic reaction, but the Benadryl didn't clear it up, so now I don't know what to think. He's been on Amoxicillan (sp?) and Tussi-12 for a week, with no problems, so I wouldn't think that is what is causing it. I just wondered what you all thought, does this sound like some sort of allergic reaction, or something else?/p
Is this a reaction?

I'm not sure if this helps, but the last two reactions I had, my face was covered in very small red dots, not hives. They took about 2 weeks to go away. They didn't itch and I felt fine, they were just there. I think it may have been broken capellaries or something.
It could be a reaction to the antibiotic, even though he had been on it a week. I would call the doctor.
I thought of that as a remote possibility and mentioned it to the ped office when I called this morning. They called me back later and said that they did not think it was the antibiotics. BUT I had called the allergist's office yesterday after lunch and they called me back today and I mentioned that he now had a full body rash and she said it DID sound like the antibiotics were causing it. Needless to say I am mucho confused and interested to see what the ped says this afternoon. I went ahead and made an appt for 4:20pm today. I just hope she has some insight!
Matt's Mom:
I'm curious what you found out today? My son ended up with those "little red bumpies" after being on amoxicillin for a week/10 days. We have since considered him allergic to penicillins. Unfortunately for him, not long ago one of the peds prescribed a penicillin-related drug (unknown to us - trusting the Dr. wholeheartedly... WRONG!!!) and he had a terrible time with it. We took him to the ER because we were afraid he was dehydrating from all the vomitting. (Sorry so graphic!!) He's never been tested for penicillin allergy, but I'm convinced regardless. Maybe someday he'll be tested... maybe not. Hope you found some answers today, and I also hope Matt is doing better!!
When my pa son had his first ear infection at 9 months, he broke out in a rash all over his body after being on amoxicillin for a couple of days. They weren't hives--just little red spots all over. When I called his pediatrician at the time, they said to consider him allergic. We've got that and peanuts on his medic alert bracelet.
I hope you find out what it is causing his rash. Take care. Deanna
Well, we just got back from the ped's. She took one lok at "Spotty" (lol) and said he was having an allergic reaction to the Amoxicillan. That could explain why the Benadryl did no good...I was still giving him the Amoxicillan! She said to give him Benadryl every 4hr for 2 days, and then gave us a prescription for Zithromax, since he still had about 4 days left on the Amoxicillan. At least we know what is going on now, though I hate to add yet another allergy to the kid! Thanks everyone for your replies! Lam- after talking to the ped today, my guess is your son is also allergic to Amoxicillan.
My son has broken out in tiny pink/red dots all over his belly and chest on occasion. The doctor seemed to think it was a viral rash. We did not treat it and he was not uncomfortable at all. It took a few days to go away.
Both of my boys have had their fair share of rashes. Some were little red spots that were allergic reactions to medications and some were viral rashes. Aarons last viral rash gave him huge welts all over his body. I took pictures of them as they were soooo big I didn't consider it as a hive...I thought he had a disease!

[b]I had posted last week that I think I had a reaction to making a PB &J sand for dd's. Well, I've thrown away the PB & I talked with my kids about not having PB in the house. They were fine with it.
Anyways, I made an overservation. I had the reaction on Thurs. night(last week). It started with a very itchy nose, (on the tip of my nose,) then it spread all over the side of my nose, my eyelids started getting itchy & my eyes felt scratchy & irritated. I didn't have any swelling. Then my scalp starting itching a lot. All of these progressed over the afternoon into the evening. I finally took 2 bendadryl even though the itching started to subside a little before that. I was fine the next a.m.
Well, about a week later, (this past wed.), I noticed that a gland under my neck was big & really sore. I remembered that I used to get that swollen gland a lot when I was eating nuts, but I didn't know that I was allergic. (this was a few years ago.) My last reaction when I realized there was a problem was when I reacted to eating 6 pecans & within 15 min. I broke out in hives & itching on my face, & I also had swollen eyes. Well, a few days after that, I had that swollen gland that lasted for quite a few days, but that was my biggest reaction.
So, I guess my question is, if what I just had for my recent reaction, would it be possible to have the swollen gland under my chin 6 days after the reaction??? Are there any links to give me info on that?
I hope that this makes sense. The swollen gland theory is soemthing that I just thought about the other night. I haven't had a swollen gland issue like this since I've been obstaining from pnuts/TN. So, that's why I wonder if that's too long of a gap from the reaction to the swollen gland.
Thanks for any info.

My allergist told me that most food allergy symptoms are gone within 24hrs. A swollen gland sounds that goes on for days like something you need to address with your doctor. It also sounds as if you will need to have a rast/skin prick test to determine what exactly you are allergic to.

This insn't always true. I had a contact reaction that lasted 4 days with strong doses of antihistimes.
