I'm not at all creative in the kitchen.
I'm always stuck for food ideas for l-o-n-g flights (12 + hours)
I'm looking for ideas for food that doesn't require refrigeration, packs easily, and can get past airport security (no gels, no liquids)
The burrito-size flour tortillas don't need refrigeration, they last a week in your luggage and they don't get squished.
On one trip, I took flour tortillas, a foil-pouch of salmon, a little bag of sliced cabbage and a tiny container of salsa. It made a palatable soft fish taco - but it was cold.
Can anyone come up with some creative ideas for something to put in a flour tortilla that fits the above criteria and still tastes good cold?

baked beans and american cheese (maybe this is just me, but when I was little my mom would do cold baked beans and a slice of white american cheese on a sandwich...it's really good [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img]
they have canned chicken like they do tuna...and I think the Swanson comes with a pull-tab top. You'd just have to drain it a bit, there isn't much water, in the lavatory sink.

woo-hoo! I was in the Safeway after my star party tonight and found Tyson chicken chunks in a "no drain" 'pouch' like how tuna and salmon comes...right in the tuna section. THere were 2 other brands as well.
This is SO going to be something good for my upcoming 8 hour flight. It doesn't need to be refrigerated til opened. That, flour tortilla, and mayo packets nabbed from a McD's in the Philly airport [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img] I'll be set.

The main thing I didn't like about the cold fish tacos at 40,000' was the smell when I opened the fish package.
It was really strong.
How about chicken salad in a tortilla! Take a baggy of diced celery and cop some mayo from McD's as you suggested - also a plastic fork to mix it with. The nice thing about the chicken and tortillas is that they'll last a long time in your luggage and won't take up a lot of room.
Good emergency food for mechanical or weather delays.
How about making a wrap sandwich with turkey lettuce etc. you can put anything in a wrap and you can use a tortilla or actual wrap bread if it is safe.

The problem with 'not in a foil pouch' meat is refrigeration. This was a conversation from email that carried over here on the board about bringing non-refrigerated and filling/yummy protein on trans-atlantic/pacific 8-10hr flights. It's the 2 hour rule for non-refrigerated meat, that 'danger zone'.
One idea I may try is to freeze grapes and use it as a temporary refrigeration in an insulated lunch sack to get through security...then once in the airport to "buy" a large fountain soda, minus the soda and all ice.
But Adele and I were brainstorming non-refrigerated options...like foil pouch salmon, tuna, chicken, SPAM (shudder) during the very long flight itself.

Ok...so no I wouldn't put that in a tortilla but it's good travel food.

I forgot about that one...I've done that before on 6am flights...I had them nuke some milk though instead of water.
They use the plane water (not necessarily bottled) and it doesn't get hot enough how they heat it for coffee/tea to kill anything bad. I don't even wash my hands with the water in a plane, I bring wet wipes.

I remember at my grad school when the chef would pack snack lunches for our mountain hikes, we'd get deviled ham (spam-like), hard boiled eggs, cheese, and french bread.
I was thinking an egg would work. It would be smelly, and if anyone were ana to it, it could be problematic, but you could poll folks surrounding you.
The laughing cow cheeses should keep a little while--especially with those little frozen grapes. [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img] You can spread them on a little baguette. Order some wine, and you'll feel like you're heading back to France Adele.

Also DS packs refried beans for lunch sometimes and makes a soft taco at school. He loves this! You could actually take a can with you (if canopeners are allowed or if you can find a pull top can). Or you could just take it in a tupperware thing. We trust Old El Paso, and I can find other brands if you need some, but I don't know about xcontam w/ cumin.
You could take shredded lettuce and cheese to add.
If you get black refried beans rather than the brown ones it could get a little runny, even though it's more interesting. You have to make it burrito style, folding the end first before the sides.
