I checked a label tonight. And it has a "May Contain Peanuts" allergen statement. This product used to contact peanuts as one of the ingredients. My first reactions to peanuts was from M & M plain candies in the 80's.

my sons second reacation and first (and only) ana reacation was to plain m and m's around 20 months.

I don't know if they ever changed the ingredients in plain M&Ms, but they've improved the labeling. The plain ones don't have peanuts in the ingredients, but they are made on shared equipment with peanuts. This means that peanuts can inadvertently get into the plain M&Ms, but it's not intentional. It's a labeling improvement that the package now indicates there could be peanut in them. My guess is that they've always been manufactured on the same line as peanuts.
You're right, they did used to list peanut as an actual ingredient. I'm not sure when the labeling changed because I never bothered to look, KWIM? To me, they still smell like they have peanut in them. The kids at the school where I teach get them twice a month and they definitely don't smell like just chocolate.

Ian had hives from his Sister's M&M mini's out of her easter eggs from school. We had to have the don't give Ian food talk again. Not to mention the let Mommy check your candy before we can bring it home talk.
Our Dr told us when Chris was just 10 months old that Plain M&Ms have Peanuts in the shell to harden it. He had never had them but he was giving us a list of not to eat items. He said people use the peanut to hardent he shells in the candies.
The explanation I've read (probably somewhere on these boards) is that sometimes the leftover chocolate from the peanut M&M's is used to make plain M&M's.
In any case, it's clear that PA folks can react to them.
I have a co-worker that started having hives, palm & feet itching, hand and feet swelling about two weeks ago. His face even swelled along with hives on his lips. He pops M &M's into his mouth all day long. He has the big bags of them in his desk all the time.
I tried to tell him he might be PA and to stop eating the M & M's until he sees an allergist. And, of course, he got mad at me and told me there are no peanuts in M & M's.
He is taking a prescription antihistamine that is keeping his reaction under control but if he forgets it...the reaction starts up again.
I think there is a very good chance he is PA.
I appreciate everyone's response and in the 80's peanut was listed as an ingredient and it was part of the shell.
It is a little annoying that they only have a May Contains warning now.
The labeling changed in the mid to late 80's. People wouldn't believe that I could not eat them and then one day peanuts started appearing in the list of ingredients. I believe it is more of a cross contamination problem then an actual ingredient in the plain m&m's. Sometimes I can eat them and other times I have to run for benadryl.
i had no idea Plain M&M's used to have peanuts in them. DD had her 1st (& thankfully, so far, only) reaction after eating a cookie w/Plain M&M's in it...we weren't quite as aware of labeling back then as we are now!
M&M's were one thing Jake used to be able to eat(before I knew better). And he never had problems(so that was a hard one to explain, that he can't have them anymore). But it helps, right on the side of the wrapper it says *may contain peanuts* and he is old enough to understand what that means! But no problems prior(and he ate them for probably 3yrs)...which was odd!
