I don't avoid them, but I make "note" of them and watch to see if there is a reaction of any sort, knowing that there could be. So far, no reactions to foods in the same "family" as peanuts/tree nuts.
I'm severe PA and supposedly TNA (by RAST only). Mango and avocado give me a "funny stomache feeling", but no itchy mouth, hives, or otherwise getting sick. Just an unsettled feeling that Tums or Pepto takes care of.
I avoid it now, after reading about cross-reactivities. It makes sense. Recently I got tested for mango and avocado and tested "maybe allergic" (RAST I/II borderline).
I don't worry about cross-x with those, but that's just me and my prior reactions/experience talking.

Called the company and they say they can't 100% guarantee no cross-contamination with mango. Asked the allergist if this stuff was okay, since son is cashew/pistachio allergic, and he says no -- must strictly avoid mango and x-contam with mango. I give my son juicy juice all the time; they sell a mango flavor, now I'll have to look into that product. Question is -- do TNA persons to these particular nuts also avoid the fruits within the same botanical family, and any cross-contam. of those fruits?!?
Hi MarkiesMom,
Has your DS been RAST tested for Mango? Has he ever ingested Mango, and if so, what was the result? I appreciate the wise caution about cross reactivity, but reactions (or absence of) trump test results. I'm not suggesting to be reckless, but wanted to understand the situation better.
For us-->My DS is now 8; his RAST tests continue to be high. PN RAST >100, tests between Class 2 and 3 on most tree nuts. However, he has ingested mango safely for years. We have been using the Justtomato products for about 3 years now - they are really terrific, and we've never had a problem with our PN/TN allergic guy...
DD has a severe pistachio allergy, (but we have no info either way about cashew)...
we've never avoided mango specifically. And trust me-- we've asked. We've asked it all.
BUT. We dont' keep any fresh because of me... and much of processed stuff isn't safe...
The reason I mention it at all is that DD happily ate dried mango for months when she was about 3. Then, quite suddenly, she refused to even touch it. (literally)
And I don't think for a minute that it was a texture thing-- she continued gobbling up dried apples, apricots, and pineapple. But I never saw any objective symptoms of any kind, either. She also won't eat avocado at all. (And in our house, you don't ever have to have a reason not to eat something.)
I have a latex allergy, but no trouble with avocado (knock wood... I love 'em). On the other hand, I found that the same dried mango used to make my mouth a bit tingly. A bit like eating a persimmon. But spicy. Is that "normal"? I didn't like it, I remember.
DS has never specifically been tested for mango, and I really can't remember if he's ever eaten anything mango; since he's so young, my guess would be no (I might have given him mango Juicy Juice -- I'm not sure) I've always been told to avoid mango; which never seemed to difficult to do. I'm waiting for a call back from the allergist to discuss this issue. (Been corresponding with him via nurse). Several emails have gone back and forth about whether or not it is safe for me to buy something which may contain traces of mango. In the last email, the nurse stated that if DS has ingested mango previously without reaction, then okay to eat. I feel I don't know enough about mango reactions and how they relate to TNA.
DD has a cashew allergy and just this year tried mango for the first time--she got a VERY tingly and irritated mouth with it...she did not want to eat any more...but she didn't get any hives or anything further.
Our allergist never mentioned to watch out for ANYTHING...just cashews...never even spoke a word about cross contamination or cross reactivity--so this board has been a real eye opener for me. ANYhow, we now do not eat mango, but we do not call any companies to ask about cross cont. for mango either. It is working for us. This is just our comfort zone. We do not eat any dried fruits...only because DD doesn't like them. Hope this helps...and good luck to you.

I asked our allergist this very question yesterday! My youngest son was just diagnosed with pistachio (was 42.3) /cashew (was 54) allergies. The rest of the tree nuts were negative except brazil nut which was "slightly elevated". The allergist said my son could have problems with other things that grow on trees such as fruits. I asked specifically about mango and he said to proceed with caution - introducing one thing at a time and watching for reaction. I'm sure I put a mango one time in a smoothie but I can't remember if he liked it (was just a few slices and the smoothie was shared by all of us) and I definitely don't remember any reaction. He reacted immediately and in a big way with the pistachio nuts he ate. I think I'll just stay away from it but I sure didn't think about cross contamination with juice!
I've been dealing with PA for 4 years now but this tree nut stuff is throwing me for a loop! Back out of my comfort zone for sure. I was in the grocery store today and saw in the deli the mortadella and it plainly says "contains pistachio pieces". So I'm still learning about all of this. My son did say the other day "Mommy, what was that I had at lunch the other day? I don't want any more of those..." You can bet on that!
Thanks for all the replies...now that I think of it, my DS hates all the stone fruits. He refuses to eat peaches and cherries -- he makes a real point of letting me know it, too. Insists on watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes. I never really gave his preference to the other fruits much thought, until now.
I was never cautioned or aware of a mango connection.
Allergist never tested or mentioned it.
Dd likes Newman's Mango Tngo juice and seems fine with it. Hmmm. I will watch her if she tries actual mangoes. I just do not much like them, so we never buy the actual whole fruit. becca

just a note to ask your deli ----
I asked at mine in my Bashas and they have a few slicers for different things. One for cheese, one for kosher meats, one for non-kosher meats. I'll also note that my deli doesn't carry a Mortadella (being in Arizona they are like, "what's that?").
So - the meat slicer should be safe, just gotta worry about hand to cheese to meat contact.
