My PA son's elementary school cafeteria is going peanut free next year! You could have knocked me over with a feather.
After I dropped my crew off at kindergarten the other day I stopped by the principal's office. My PA child is the first in his class to be invited to the "Einstein" party, and I wanted to make sure that it would be safe for him. heh heh heh had to get that piece of news in there & brag just a little on my little Einstein
It just so happened that the lady that runs the cafeteria was walking up just then. The principal introduced us & told me that she was in charge of all the food that would be at the party and & I should talk to her. It was then that this lady started telling me all of the preparations they have already made for the changes next year. I of course asked what changes next year - she looked like I just landed from Mars. She was amazed that I didn't know that the entire school's cafeteria program was going peanut free because of my PA son.
We hadn't even asked them to do this. I had warned them that I would be needing to talk to the cafeteria ladies this year to see what I thought needed to be done for next year. But I hadn't even gotten started on that project yet.
Now by this time in the conversation the principal had gone on to other things. So I'll find out later in the year what their "plan" is. But Wow! This is just too cool. The kitchen won't be serving any peanut products at all. Which really wasn't much of a change other than the substitute PB&J sandwiches they had if kids don't like the main offering. They are switching over to cheese sandwiches for those. They'll be serving Chocolate Chip instead of Peanut Butter cookies, and they won't be serving the Trail Mix that they give out just a few times a year.
Now I realize this doesn't address what other children bring into the school. But in my particular school district a HUGE percentage - like over 70% - qualify for free lunches. So not very many kids pack their lunches if they can get it for free.
So I am just tickled Pink! Most likely I'll be packing my crew's lunches - it's just easier & less stressful for me if I read every label every time myself, plus usually more healthy than what school serve these days. But at least I won't have to worry about my PA son sitting in a room with 100 PB&J sandwiches all around him.

We live in Idaho, and there are around 80 to 85 Kindergartners I think, two of which are mine . The school is K - 6.
Thanks for all the warm fuzzies on this - for this to have happened the same week that we found out his RAST is > 100, it almost makes it a wash for the week!
