We just booked a week long trip for November 06'. Anyone there recently?
What good restaurants should we go to? Which character breakfasts or meals should we do (we have two boys)? We will be staying at the Coronado.
Thanks!

We stayed at the Coronado last January. It was beautiful. The older kids loved the pool and play area. We paid for the fridge in the room so we could do cereal, fruit, breakfast bars for breakfast. We used the food court at the hotel for sandwiches a couple of times without a problem.
The Hoop-Dee-Doo Review was great-booked ahead and discussed the peanut, treenut, and egg allergies-dessert was a go-strawberry shortcake- they brought a special fruit plate for my daughter (egg allergy). No problems there. We had steak at Le Cellier (sp) in Epcot-too expensive, small portions, and the bread was off-limits according to the chef. The Liberty Tree Tavern was fabulous with the characters. Its family style turkey dinner only the bread was an issue again. The chef came out and they had it noted about the allergy-booked ahead and called day before to remind them.
We ate lunch in the parks asking to see ingredients at the counters or registers-they all had 3-ring binders with info. to check. We had burgers, pizza(Pizza Planet in MGM as in Toy Story), hot dogs, sandwiches, etc. We were able to have novelty ice cream- they have ingredients on the labels.
Disney really makes it easy to check ingredients and the phone calls we made to restaurants were taken seriously and remembered.
Have a wonderful trip we can't wait to go back. Here's a couple of pics of hotel and the restaurants I mentioned.

Hey, Janey L,
Thanks so much for the info! I love the pictures. Your kids look like they are all having a great time. What a great picture of that pool! We are definately looking forward to checking out that slide!
My husband said that he heard that the Hoopdee Doo Review was a good one too. I'll have to check that out. I just can't get past the name, LOL!
Now our only issue is that we booked our flights on USAir with frequent flyer miles (so that all four of us could fly for free!). But I just read here that they merged with America West and are now serving peanuts. UGH! I hope that they can at least not serve them on our flights (here we go again!).

this is where we are staying this year:

except we are getting a bunk house with double slides and a slide in the living room. Still bringing the golf cart, Fort Wilderness Campground is huge and we make tracks. Although you can rent them (golf carts) by the day at Fort Wilderness Campgrounds. ($$)
last year, Fort Wilderness (home to the "Hoop De Doo" and "Mickey's Back Yard Barbeque")

similiar experience here. we are booking as early in advance as we can. (it will be our 3rd time)
Have you ever done "Mickey's Back Yard Barbeque"? (drool)
We ate extensively (with advance notice and always a head's up to the head chef) at Trails End in Fort Wilderness. We ordered take out on occassion from Davey Crocket's. (I thought it was reasonable too) (All that way to Florida and the cubs still hanker for pizza)Every morning, we took the golf cart down to Trail's end (or one of the "outpost" gift shops and filled our endless mugs for free. ) Stopped by the beach, checked out a spot at the pool and planned our day. On occassion, we ended up at the campfire roasting weenies and marshmellows in anticipation of the evening outdoor movie looking over our loot for the day. We even caught the evening hayride a few times.

I'd like to try this.

we stayed 18 days. Any longer and we might not have been able to reassimiliate into "everyday" society again.

MimiM,
The flying issue is one we've put on hold. I hate flying-having only done it twice and plan on never doing it again. Our allergist asked me about it once-looking to give advice and knowledge and I told him it was a moot point. My son will have to deal with it in his own way as an adult.
We took the autotrain from Virginia. Left around 4pm, had dinner, slept, and woke up in Florida. We paid to bring our minivan also with all our luggage, stroller, food, and kids things. It was great but about the cost of flying-(but didn't need to rent a car).
It's great staying in Disney resorts because of all the "Magic Hours". Special times when only resort guests can use the parks. Either before or after the regular park hours. My kids rode some rides over and over without waiting!!! It was terrific!! They gave us all the info. when we checked in so we planned which parks accordingly. We also paid extra for the 'park hopper' privileges so you can go from one park to another in the same day. Definitely worth the upgrade!! Ask questions of staff-everyone wanted to help us and gave us great tips!!(Mommabear-do the Disney camping parks have these perks?)
Mickey's Backyard Barbecue and Chef Mickey's looked great Mamabear. We were afraid to book too many things-we wanted to be free to be as spontaneous as you can be with a 2 year old who still takes naps. Those will be at the top of our list next time along with Cinderella's breakfast (which I tried for days to book-never got through).
Here's a picture after a day of "park hopping"-my little girl even slept through a bath after the picture was taken.

absolutely. Fort Wilderness Campground is a Disney Resort. And honestly? the guest service there was phenominal. Magical even. They were pretty free with the "comps" IMO. (Individual Mileage May Vary). I still have 5 park hopper passes.
and yes, personally, we found ourselves running to the front of the non-existant lines during "Magic Hours". (We were there in April) but, IMMV.
Personally? I view "Fort Wilderness" as one of the best kept secrets. But again, maybe that's not everyone's opinion. But there are quite a few "resort guests" who bring $200,000 + plus digs to eat, relax, and sleep in.
I mean, I'm sure they are no stranger to "guest service".
and we get to see the water light parade and fireworks from the beach at night, even when we don't feel like taking the boat to Magic Kingdom. BTW, I thought the food at "Trail's End" was probably some of the best and most relaxing in Disney. Again, individual tastes, preferences, experiences may vary, but we've been quite satisfied.
A few times, hubby and I snuggled up in Davey Crocket's or sipped a cool one on the porch of Davey Crocket's in the rocking chairs) after the cubs were out cold from the day's activities and Grandma kept an eye on things at the "camper". I mean, sometimes we didn't take the golfcart, we just had a long, slow, stroll home.
and I do say "home". I mean, we brought one with us.
but shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. don't want too many interlopers from the other resorts.
Some links to Disney's "Fort Wilderness Campground Resort"

I mean, we could never tolerate 18 days in *any* Disney Hotel. As luxurious as some may be. KWIM? I mean, it was sooooooooooo relaxing. The cubs truly have had some of the best times of their young lives there. Food Allergies or not, *I've only lasted 1-2 days, tops, in hotels. Even *the best* ones. But that might just be me.

Thanks Mommabear and Janey L.,
The pictures really say it all! I read about Mickey's backyard BBQ and thought that this sounded good too. Between that and the Hoopdee Doo Review (there's that name again!), we should should be set for scheduled afairs. Although we may add one more formal night. We'll see.
As you said, J.L., we don't want to schedule too many things because then we might feel tied down.
We were actually at Disney 4 years ago and did Chef's Mickey's and (I can't remember the name of the other one) a 50's diner in MGM. Anyway, both were great but I must say, we had to stay away from everything near the PB pizza. That being said, we didn't let them know ahead of time about my son's peanut allergy. He was fine nevertheless and was happy to have the Mickey waffles which were served in a different area. Glad to know that they can get those ice cream things. We avoided them last time since we didn't know.
Being able to take advantage of "Magic Hours" and park hopper passes is actually why we decided to stay on Disney property. We thought about staying off property because we also are going to Universal for two days but decided that it's not really worth it.
In regards to the USAir thing, I think I'll add to Robin LP's thread about the status of that issue.
Thanks for all the info from both of you and I absolutely LOVE the pictures!!! They are so great!
reraising.

Please see my post below in the travel section. We must notify not only Disneyworld but the cruise lines of the problem with airlines. That will make an impact. No way will we be able to do it through the airlines alone. Look at the responses we are getting. A Review is under way or we are currently looking at our policy on serving peants. Well if they heard from those mentioned above (Cruise line, Disney) we may get someplace. Please help me get the word out. Thanks. "United we stand, Divided we Fall"
We just booked, too. 11/4 - 11/10. We're staying at a Beach Club Villa.
Julie
We just returned from another great (and safe) trip to Disney with our 6 year old PA DD!
I would recommend the Crystal Palace character dinner with the Winnie the Pooh characters (they do lunch and breakfast too). The chef came to our table, walked us around the entire buffet, and was very serious about what was safe and what to avoid. He baked some fresh rolls just for us because he wasn't certain about the safety of those on the buffet. He also baked my daughter her own brownie because he said to avoid all of the desserts on the buffet. She ate little bits of the chicken fingers, roast turkey, rotisserie chicken, and potatoes as well as some fresh fruit and salad without dressing.
Another tip. All cashiers at the counter-service restaurants now have binders in a drawer below their registers that list out the ingredients of all of the food served at that particular restaurant. Therefore, it was easy to verify the type of oil used for frying, etc., etc. Also, tell the cashier when you order that you have a food allergy and this gets printed onto the slip that they see in the kitchen. They will take extra precautions when preparing your order.
