What is your definition of a peanut free room.
DD reacts to airborn/contact peanut, and also has tree nut allergy
My dd is scheduled to attend a gifted school that is shared by other schools, so one day a week she would attend a different school, they said they would make the room peanut free on the day she attends but the other 4 days a week this room is not peanut free - - - so how does that = peanut free, am I being unreasonable to say in her case (airborn/contact allergic) that would not be considered peanut free? The room is carpeted and they eat two snacks a day.
You are not being unreasonable at all. Do you have a 504 or a ihp plan in place at school. It should follow to whatever room or building your child is in.
I would request that that room always be peanut free: No peanut products/tree nuts used at any time for manipulatives or projects or whatever and no peanut/tree nut snacks allowed of any kind. I would not ask for any made in or manufactured on products to be excluded.
Good luck
Yes we just got a 504 and it has not been implemented. It was very vague (written at the meeting where we discussed qualifications) I found that was not worth a penny written that way. Her elem. school was pretty much doing things our way and acceptable for the K half day (no eating) We have a 2nd 504 rescheduled tomorrow.
Thank YOU!
I have struggled with this topic with DD's pre-school. Her class is peanut free, however the room is used for another class on Thursday and Friday and is not peanut free. DD is also contact reactive. The teachers do an extra cleaning of the tables on Friday after class, and she has never had any type of reaction while there.
If I were in your situation and this was not pre-school I would probably pursue it more. I guess since I know the teachers well, and feel very comfortable with their cleaning I am ok with this.
our preschool (also run by the district) experienced an emergency when they had an AM class (peanut allergy) and a PM class eating peanut in the same room. The PM class ate a peanut snack and the next morning the child had the life threatening reaction from touching the underside of the table where a PM student had wiped his hands. That has prompted them to create two dedicated rooms of peanut free tree nut free 24/7 they do both rooms since they share a bathroom inbetween. I had to go in today and get their documentation. The lady in charge never wanted to see that kind of reaction again. She even debates banning peanut all together.
We were very lucky to attend their school, to bad that to take it seriously, you have to witness the tragedy.
