\"What\'s for Dinner?\" AKA: The \'Bad Mommy\' Thread

Now, I want to be clear that nothing I post in this thread is meant as advice, endorsement, or otherwise an act of condonment. KWIM? It's just what I give *MY* family. Possibly with disasterous consequences. I mean, I still hold my breath on quite a number of occasions. It's how, after some soul-searching, my family handles things. Individual Mileage May Vary. Just describing the highly individual, personal, and possibly unique circumstances in the constellation of *MY* family. Happenstance. Could be the *wrong* way, or just what works for *my* family. Might not "work" for other families. For all I know, other families might have *already* had a bad or even disaterous experience with items on this menu.

But hey, dinner last night at *my* house:

[b]~Appetizer~[/b]

Strawberry tomatoes, President's choice Collossal Black Olives, Reeces small artichoke hearts, and Green Giant jarred whole mushrooms marinated in Star Virgin Olive Oil, Star Balsamic Vinegar, Oregano, Crushed Black Pepper, Sugar, and Salt.

[b]~Entree~[/b]

Charcoal Grilled boneless skinless chicken breasts grilled with Lawrey's "Hawiaan" Pineapple marinade. Topped with Dole, natural juice pinapple rings.

[b]~Sides~[/b]

Fresh Green Beans steamed

Fresh Corn on the Cob nibblers boiled.

Lipton "Rice Sides" Chicken Flavor.

[b]~Beverages~[/b]

Water, Milk (2%), Coffee (Folgers Decaf), (with or without "International Delight 'Reduced Sugar' French Vanilla), Diet 7-up, Canfields Gingerale.

[b]~Dessert~[/b]

Sara Lee "Golden Baked Classic" New York Style Cheesecake (frozen section) 30 grams of fat per serving. 16 grams saturated. 2.5 trans. [i]135 cholesterol[/i]. (did I need to mention that??---just trying to give this some [i]perspective[/i].) I bought *two*.

toppings:

Mrs. Richardson's "Strawberry Topping".

Hershey "Bar in a Jar" Milk Chocolate topping. (I heat it up slightly to pour.)

Reddi Whip Whip cream (can) aerosol. (The "original" flavor)

There was no item on this menu my cubs did not either try, nibble, gobble, or otherwise [i]lick[/i] off their plates.

But hey, slap me. I might be a....("FBI files" intro.....[i][b]BAD MOMMY[/b][/i]).

I think it's awesome that your kids eat those things. And DH would just die if I made a meal that good!

If I could get my kids to eat what your kids eat I would give them desserts like that every night! Honestly though, be proud that they will eat such a variety!

Great thread. Let's keep it up.
What will probably be on my table tonight: a potato omelette, AKA a fritatta. Easy cheesy stuff (especially since DH makes it; I don't).
You cook it in a cast iron skillet. It cooks on the stove and then eventually under the broiler.
You cook whatever veggies you have (saute onions and some of the veggies first) with eggs (DH puts milk in there). Top with cheese.
We'll serve with water or milk (if it involves brocolli or spinach, water, because milk hinders the absorbtion of iron). Wine possibly for DH and me.
DS may get a Dare cookie or two that a good friend smuggled from Candada and some Bluebell Homemade Vanilla icecream with fresh blueberries--if they're still okay. We've been out of town for two days. We don't always have dessert, but if there's something around, then sure!

I believe they are either called "Strawberry Tomatoes" or "Amorosa Tomatoes". Either way, I slice mine in halves for the marinade.
Last week, I found a [i]thirty two pack[/i] (four clusters of 8 tomatoes each) on sale for around four bucks (if I count and remember correctly). I plan meals around what's on sale and stock up on favorite items when I find them at a good price (like the artichoke hearts, 2 cans for 4 dollars). Jewel has been having some great "dollar" sales lately....I'm in heaven.
And ooooooooh, the filets have been on some great sales. Yesterday was "America's cut" pork chops for about a buck apiece! I use Jewel brand "shake and bake" pork or chicken coating. The pork, imho, tastes better and has less ingredients.... Again, no advice, no recommendation, just what works for my family. Found the larger jars of whole button mushrooms for under a dollar as well. Shishkabobs are a snap between the mushrooms and the larger strawberry tomatoes (about a little bigger than a golf ball). Plus they don't fall off the skewers as much either. I tend to shop wholesalers when I stock up on "snack size" puddings, applesauces, fruit cups.

something about a cast iron. It really makes for some tender casseroles. I'll have to post my husband's camp recipies. (Uses several charcoal brickets on top to the dutch oven).
If you have (or if anyone else has) some good recipies for covered skillets, I'm all ears! Love quiche-type egg recipies, thank you for the heads up!

oh, if you only knew my weakness for salami....er sausage. [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/wink.gif[/img] As much as my MIL and me do not "mix" well, I can't say an iota against her German/Lithuanian style cookery. And her Kugelis! Not a smidge of brown discoloration. (key was the fruit fresh on her shredded potatoes)
