Helen
Mom to Alyssa (PA, age 6)
Mom to Theodore (age 3)
Emily is allergic to all tree nuts except almonds and pecans (as per two sets of skin and RAST tests). She eats mangoes and garbanzo(ceci) beans without a problem. I am afraid to try lentils, which she ate very often before diagnosis.
Mango skin has anirritating chemical in it- for anyone- so when preparing a mango avoid serving pieces of the skin.

I had never heard of a problem w/cross-reactivity to mangoes. Thanks for bringing it up. We have religiously eaten (w/out consequence, luckily) Philippine Dried Mangoes from Costco. I actually emailed the president in the Philippines (sales@profoodcorp.com) and he assured me there was no cross-contam. risk w/PN or TN. Maybe your son is reacting to the preservative in the dried mango? I know I shouldn't be giving my boys any foods w/preservatives, but they love these. THey only eat two or three at a time - but it does contain sulfur dioxide as a preservative.
I am in reverse, I'm allergic to mangos but not nuts. Or that I know of yet. When my dr told me I had an allergy to mangos he also said that I could develop an allergy to hazelnuts...as of yet I haven't had a problem but I don't eat them much anymore with ds being allergic to peanuts.
Interesting. DS is TNA but he eats mango, avocado, and garbanzo (chick) peas. I thought avocado and mango are fruits and not nuts. Like coconut which is a fruit and not a nut. i need to find out more about that. Google.com didn't help.
My dd is allergic to PA and all TN but she has eaten dried mango without problems-

Okay, I finally got to speak with the allergist himself, not the allergist through the nurse. He said I need not worry about cross-contamination with mango. Ordering the just tomatoes products should pose no risk. I don't know why the nurse said what she did? Maybe she was erring on the side of caution until I could speak with the doctoir.
ok, this post is crazy!!!!! who knew?
i think my reaction to mango is just about as severe as my reaction to nuts... didnt realize there could be a connection...
