Well, for us, this is a real pain because it's the only restaurant less than 15-20 minutes away that was safe. And the only place I (SFA) could have something off the grill.
Because of our jobs and schedules, we do have to eat out a bit. I'm just sorry there is one fewer option now, but my last experience shows a real shift--and into an area below my comfort zone.

I read your post from your visit the other night. I know how you feel about losing a restaurant that is one of your favorites...we've been there too. [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/frown.gif[/img]
Anyway, last night DH brought home the video about all the new rollout menu items. One of the items is a new tilapia recipe. Anyhoo, while watching it they instruct the people to grab a certain color tong and lay the fish on the "Seafood" area of the grill.
I paused the video and asked him about it..He said they have certain color tongs for beef, chicken, and seafood. He also said that absolutley their are specific areas of the grill for seafood AT ALL TIMES.
And the corporate chef reienterated this.
Now, my point is this, IF you are still okay eating there with the chili, I would call and speak to the GENERAL manager not just the manager on duty, and tell him what was said to you the other night about the grill. If the GM says the same I would contact corp and let them know, as this is against policy.
Just my two cents...

Whenever we go to Chili's my son gets french fries and mac n cheese. I talked to the manager the other day and he said that those foods should have no problem with the chili with the peanuts in it (which he didn't even know had peanuts until I had him look)! The chili is served in the same bowl as the mac n cheese. Do you think there will be a problem with that?

Thanks baer5--and for that level of detail. It certainly gives me something to ponder. I think if nothing else, I [i]will[/i] call the general manager and ask about the grill. That's a great suggestion.
You know, I have the Chili's number in my cell phone, because we can call ahead for a place in line. That's how much we've loved it!

So the manager didn't even know that the chili now has peanuts in it. And they must not say so on their menu, I take it. They are going to kill someone!
This is a national chain restaurant, and there's a peanut ingredient where you don't expect it. Sure, some of us have heard of peanut butter in chili and some of us are careful enough to ask about peanuts in unlikely food. But there are so many allergic people out there who don't really know how careful they need to be, don't ask questions at restaurants, and don't look this stuff up online. And obviously, people could even get the wrong answer, because if the manager doesn't know, do you expect every waiter or waitress to know?

Actually it does say so on the menu.
I have no idea HOW he could NOT know it is in there, as it has been a HUGE deal. They sent home a video on it!! They are told to address it EVERYDAY at EVERY preshift meeting with the servers.
I am not defending their choice to add this to the menu in fact I disagree with their choice. However, they are doing ALOT to ensure that every guest that walks in the front door knows about it.

Well the manager on duty this week didn't know it was even in there. He said he didn't think it had pb in it and how did I know. Well I told him to go and look and sure enough he got back on the phone and says you are right. I said isn't that something important that a manager should know. So here I guess it isn't stressed, but we haven't had a problem yet. My question is would you feed you child mac n cheese in a bowl that has been used and run through their dishwasher for chili? Does anyone know? I would think it would be fine, but I don't know.

Would I allow DS to eat the mac and cheese? The answer is I don't know yet. I am struggling with this. Probably struggling alot more than most, for obvious reasons.
We have a VERY tight comfort zone, although not as strict as some. I don't think the bowls would bother me as much as the other possible cross contamination issues. However, the thought of him eating out of something that at one time had peanut butter swimming in it makes my stomach hurt....
I am probably going too far by saying this, but DH said he is not sure DS will eat at Chilis again, unless he prepares the food himself. And we eat at any of them for free...

Obvious? I don't see it. Because of DH working there?
What's to struggle? Fish or cut bait? **** or get off the potty? Whats the issue?
I know the issue. Do you, or don't you?
Heck, theres PLENTY of places to go out to eat, if you WANT to.
If you're not 100% confident in the establishment, then don't go.
I mean.. what the issue? I feel the pain on this, truly I do...
But I just cannot get 'bent out of shape' because an eatting establishment has started making ONE product with peanuts.
Sure, things can be 'possibly' cross contaminated...
I just read a story about the Prince Pizza House in Saugus and how they went 'peanut free' (snap) like that. Just because of one family.
So Chilis doesn't want PA folks eatting at their place. Don't go. Find another place. [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img]
Don't tell me though that you like the food, the prices, etc.. If you WANT to go out to eat, you MAKE it happen for yourself.

With all due respect, you seem a bit flippant about this. It may be because you have to deal with so many more allergies than many of us do that this doesn't seem like a big deal.
baer has understandable conflict here: comfort zone vs. the possibly having no problems and still a fabulous price. I understand why she might have to struggle with this more than others do; but she may in the end be comfortable to go there. Give her some time, man.
I mean, if your congregation (making an assumption here, knowing you're a rabbi--you might not be serving a congregation, for all I know) all of sudden changed policies so that your daughter might be more unsafe there than in the past, would your wife feel as comfortable taking her? Might she struggle a bit with the comfort zone?
If my husband's place of employment all of a sudden started adding peanuts to every event we went to, I might not want to take my son there. I might--but it might take some time to get there.
I'm rambling a bit--but not everyone shares your comfort zone/decisiveness. Or mine. And that's fine.
