I am presenting a conference session about food allergies in early childhood and elementary school settings in August. I got a notice that my presentation had been accepted with a follow-up email asking me to change my title. My original title "When PB&J Kills: Management of Food Allergies in Early Childhood Settings" has been changed by the organizers to "When PB&J Causes Serious Injury: Management of Food Allergies in Early Childhood Settings." When I asked why and explained anaphylaxis, the organizer sent the following response.

"Thank you for accepting the change. Some felt "kill" was too strong even
though we agree with you."

I can't do a lot other than laugh about it, but you can bet my handouts will say "Kill!"

At least I get to talk about food allergies, which is a stretch for this conference. So, I'm sucking it up....and shaking my head.

Hmmm. No one can deal with straight talk anymore. So many sensibilities that must not be offended. Sheesh! Well, in the body of your talk you can at least use real language about deadly peanuts.

Good luck with your presentation session. I sure wish ALL early childhoood educators/caregivers could see it. Where is this going to be? Is it some type of annual conference that people travel to, or is it just a local thing in your area -- I'm curious because I know the teachers in my son's daycare go to conferences on early childhood education stuff very often.
I like your original title much better -- "causes serious injury" sounds so forced...and it's really not "serious injury" that happens w/ accidental ingestions, you either live or you don't...it's not like a PA kid is in a full body cast and going to PT for 6 mos. after an attack (which is what I think of when I hear the term "serious injury").
How about "when PB&J makes you call 911?"? It conveys the seriousness of the matter without being so shocking...
Again - best of luck w/ your presentation.

Oh,how silly,!!!
the only change that should be made is not the kill part, just the PB&J
I would have put, food, everyone links allergy deaths to just peanut, but it can be so many other foods.
So how about ,
'food allergy, when food has the potenitial to kill'?

It is the North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children conference. Actually, I am talking about the "big 8" and my summary in the program will say that- but I needed a catchy title. How silly!

I presented last week and it was a great presentation (not because of me, but the group and I clicked!) I have been asked to do a series of trainings for preschools on food allergies from a health department. I was surprised at the number of folks who seemed to get it and to care...
Maybe there is hope!

Hooray!!! And don't be shy on taking credit for yourself; if you hadn't done a great job I'm sure you wouldn't have "clicked" with the group.
Congratulations!!!!

I am glad it went well. I personally am offended by their asking you to change the title. It is like they are saying "let`s pretend that food allergies don`t kill people---they only seriously injure people". That is so ridiculous!
