My name is Aimee & my daughter Hailey has a sever allergy to peanuts. When she was 18 months I gave her a PB&J sandwich. Her lips immediately swelled. I knew about a peanut allergy. I called our ped who told me to give her benedryl & then proceeded to say "guess you won't be giving her peanuts again" in a very joking manner. (I switched peds). Took her to an allergist & he said to just assume she has the allergy & when she is 3 we will do the skin test. Turned 3 & took her for the testing showing a severe allergy to peanuts & cats. Of course there are a bunch of other things but those were the severe one.
I never realized how much stuff "might" contain peanuts. We went out to lunch one day & I didn't even think to ask what they cook with. She had grilled cheese & french fries. About 5 minutes later she started to swell. Asked what they cook with & was told peanut oil. So now we always ask.
I also have a 2 year old who is showing signs of the same allergy. Had chinese & after a few bites her face broke out in a rash. So they are on the same diet. Will take the little one for testing when she is a little older.

Cliok, hi, and welcome. What you are feeling is completely normal. You will find alot of helpful information here, but sometimes you have to just stop reading.
You will adjust to life with this allergy and in time most of what you do will be second nature.
How old is your daughter? Was she diagnosed because of a reaction or just testing?
Hi Cliok,
I know it's very overwhelming and scary. Give yourself time to let it sink in (while you're of course doing your crash course on reading labels...) and it will become a part of your life that you get used to.
We've been dealing with this for 1 yr. now, and it has gotten somewhat easier. You'll find some people in your life who understand and will bend over backwards for your child. And, you may unfortunately come across some people who don't understand the seriousness of the allergy.
All you can do is the best you can to keep your child safe, happy, and balanced and you as well. Come to the board when you need support, and good luck!

Thanks for the replies - my little girl had a reaction to cashew nuts and then we went to see an allergy specialist and the allergy was confirmed for us. Hopefully we will all get used to it - it's great to know that there are others out there going through the same thing!

My son is 19 and has been allergic to many things besides Peanuts forever. He has had a number of big reactions but thankfully has always done well.
He is away at college now, 80 miles from home and after initial fear on all our parts he is doing very well.
He manages his allergies and asthma on his own and has been able to make safe choices in the college cafeteria.
It was a long tough time when he was first diagnosed but I threw myself into learning how and helping him learn how to live with is PA.
So it happens, they grow up and grow out of the house. I am here to tell you that.

Hi Hnonut,
I was diagnosed two years ago this week. I remember the first trips to the grocery store. That's when I truly realized how life-changing the diagnosis is.
It took about a year before it felt 'normal' to have PA.
You will get used to it!!
