Antibacterial wipes

It's in my son's 504 Plan that certain things will be wiped down prior to his use. I was just wondering (the school didn't seem to know either) if I am suppose to provide all the wipes or does the school? If anyone knows, please pass on your info. Thanks!!

Jodi2boys, what specific things are supposed to be wiped down before your son uses them?
Are anti-bacterial wipes what you would want used to wipe these things done or something else?

If a child is in a wheelchair...the school provides the elevator, handicapped entrances, ramps in the lunchroom, special desks, handicapped accessible busses etc.
If a child is mentally challenged...the fed govt/state govt/school provide special materials, videos, special education teachers etc.
Seems to me the school should provide this.

Our elementary school provides the wipes to be used for the allergic children who have it stated in their 504. They provide wipes for the classmates in the classrooms (hand wipes) and seperate wipes for the desks, lunch tables, etc. (cleaning wipes). It has been effective so far and they never asked us to purchase them.

maddiesmom, I'm Canadian so we don't have 504 Plans but I had wanted to clarify with Jodi2boys regardless what the wipes were for so that perhaps people could answer her better.
I have *heard* of a lot of members that supply their own wipes, but I don't know if the school has asked them to or if it is just a matter of choice.
Could you tell me if you had it in your child's 504 Plan that certain things were to be wiped (even hands) with wipes and the school DOES provide the wipes?
Jodi2boys, I'm wondering to get more response to your question, which is certainly valid (I can just see the first day of school - you thinking they have wipes, them thinking you do [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/redface.gif[/img] ), if you looked at other 504 Plans posted on the board and see if members do have wipes in their plans and then perhaps contact them and see if they do supply them or the school does.
I would agree with cathlina that if it's in a 504, the school *should* be covering it, but I also remember a couple of years ago, a Canadian member posting about paper towels being taken out of bathrooms in her school board district (and I'd like to re-read that actually because I don't know how it was resolved).
I could actually see the schools that I have dealt with, if I made that request, they would make me buy them.
What I did do personally last year, when I was running the breakfast program, it was in a room that was used by other students and also after school by other organizations. I would wash down the table each morning with dish detergent and hot water, and depending on how much time I had to set-up, I'd put a drop of bleach into the mix.
As far as the keyboard and mouse, after reading about Valerie's son's reaction here 1-1/2 years ago (I believe), I spoke with the principal and Jesse has his own keyboard and mouse.
I haven't looked at a 504 Plan in quite some time, but again, it would be interesting to see what fellow members have in theirs and if they have to provide the wipes or if you do.

Jodi, we don't use wipes at all in school, they use disposable rags and hot soapy water. They also wash hands in the morning and after lunch. The school provides everything. We've never been asked to purchase anything.
I guess your school may look at it as who asked for it? If they want them, they may pay. If you requested it I guess they could say, fine, pay for them. I really don't know , and it may vary district to district.
Sorry I couldn't help, we just don't use wipes.

momma2boys, which raises another question for me, in just trying to sort this out perhaps for Jodi2boys.
Are wipes really necessary? Why? What are the alternatives? Are the alternatives more cost effective?
As I posted above, when I ran the breakfast program, I simply washed down the table with a cloth (not disposable, a regular dish cloth that I took home and washed) with dish detergent and sometimes a drop of bleach (I didn't want children getting overwhelmed with bleach fumes on an empty stomach, so, it wasn't done very often, really depended on what time I got into the school and if kids were arriving or not).
I would think that wipes would be very expensive, but then again, I don't know. If American schools are as cash strapped as the ones in Ontario, I could see where a more cost effective solution (if, in fact, wipes are expensive) would be better presented to them.
What kind of disposable cloths, do you know?

Also, Jodi2boys (are your names almost the same or is it really late for me [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/redface.gif[/img] ), would wipes be used to clean the children's hands as well or is it okay if they wash their hands with soap and water and dry them on say paper towels (as long as you're not in the school board district that morgansmom is in [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/wink.gif[/img] )?
For anyone at home, just thinking about wiping down your computer keyboard and mouse, what do you use? I believe I had asked skinder27 this question in Off Topic but can't remember the answer.
Oh, momma2boys, you also mentioned that it depends on who requires the wipes. Does that mean that in a 504 Plan meeting, the school can actually have requirements as well as the PA parent? So, that the school can say, okay, we'd feel more comfortable if these things were wiped down for your child.
Then, them having said that, it would be THEIR request rather than the PA parents' request and the school would then have to pay for the wipes?

Jodi,
I live in northeast pennsylvania and my school supplies all of the wipes for our classroom. If other children come in to the classroom or they mix up the classes for anything particular then they all "must" wipe their hands.
They also have cleaner for his chairs, tables, and anything else that deem necessary to clean off for Drew.
Our school is worried about the liability of possibly of being sued. I played hardball with them right from the start. Certain things I backed down from in class, but other things which I deemed necessary was implemented into the classroom.
From which state do you live? I'm sure if you talk to the Director of Special Education for your school he will provide you with all of the necessary paperwork needed to keep your child safe. In Pennsylvania they call it chapter 15 (we call it 504).
If you feel it necessary for you classroom to have the wipes (our classroom does not have a sink to wash hands becuase it is an older school) put it into your 504 and don't back down. It is up to the school to keep your son {safe} during the school day.

Thanks for everyone's responses. To clarify actually what the wipes would be used for, here are a couple examples:
wipe the table down in Libary
wipe the keyboard and mouse down in Computer
wipe certain things down in Gym
The wipes will not be used for the kids to wash their hands (not this year anyway). They have a sink in the classroom and wash when entering the class and before snack.
In the 504 Meeting, they agreed that the Classroom Aide will wipe down the things I mentioned above with wipes but we didn't discuss who will purchase all the wipes.
The 504 Coordinator talked to the Principal last week and he said- "who is going to buy the wipes?". So, I know he doesn't know either. I was hoping to find something, in writing, stating whos responsibility it is to provide something like that.
Everyone's responses made sense....school should seeing they provide certain things for handicapped children. Parents might have to if they requested it to be done. But....still not sure?

Jodi2boys, to the best of my understanding, in reading ryan's mom's 504 Plan, which I did re-raise because I had a few questions, it looks as though even though she (or her and her DH, whatever) made the request for wipes, the school is paying for them. Not entirely clear because it is a pretty extensive plan, but I think that's what I read.
I did see that you had read it and commented on it, you might want to check through it again and see if you interpret it the same way I do. [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/confused.gif[/img]

Hi Jodi2boys,
I haven't read through this whole thread, so if I'm repeating I apologize...another member emailed me to see if I could add to this.
Cameron's school provides the wipes for Cameron - I do NOT have a 504, but a health plan for him. His health plan does state that the school supplies the wipes.
Cindy mentioned a cloth vs wipes - in the beginning, Cam's school used a seperate rag and bucket of soapy water for his table in the cafeteria, then changed to the wipes - I have to say I was as pleased as the aide which was responsible for wiping the table because I was fearful that someone would grab the wrong bucket/cloth....with wipes it doesn't matter.
The other thing Cindy asked was "Can the school make requirements?" To answer that question - they can definately make requirements of their own. In my case they have asked (in this case I use the word ask, b/c they can't require this particular thing) but they have asked that I be present on all field trips - which they didn't have to ask - I will be at all them regardless.
