I have been homeschooling my 6 year old for a year now. Just finished Calvert Kindergarten and he seems to love it. He is reading on his own and his math skills are second grade level. I want to continue for 1st grade but the cost is pretty high. Any advice on less expensive at least until the 2nd grade. The cost with teacher help is $810.00. With me staying home it is difficult to manage.. thanks for your help. Kathy Ann

wow that is expensive!! I know that Calvert is pretty high though. Not sure if this will help but for my 2 first graders we're going to be using lifepacs from alpha omega for math, science and social studies. CLP for spelling, and probably Christian Light Education for the other language arts (phonics, etc) and supplement with explode the code. I was lucky to find teacher manuals used but the rest is new and will probably cost around $300-350 for both of them once I finish buying it all. When my oldest was doing first grade we used Bob Jones and we weren't happy with it at all-but I think it cost less than $300 for the whole thing (math, science, social studies, spelling) plus reading reflex for reading. If you want something less expensive you might have to consider a less expensive curriculum. Maybe check out the boards at vegsource for some advice? Good luck!

Did you find you had to get the teacher assisted program from Calvert? I am planning to get this program in a couple of weeks, and was just going to get the 'independent' option . Thanks!

Hi Nicolimom, I did not get the teacher assisted program for Kindergarten but thought maybe I would for 1st grade. Sometimes I wonder if I use the right approach to get him interested and thought the extra help couldnt hurt, but I guess without that extra $ it would make it alot easier to handle, and we loved Calvert.. thanks, Kathy Ann
