I called T-Mobile and the lady said my cell phone won't work in NH becuase they don't own any towers where we will be going and they haven't been able to negotiate a contract with anyone who does own towers in NH. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to be up there without a cell phone. Could I buy a pre-paid Tracfone? How do you do that? Where do you buy them from and how much do they cost? Can you buy enough minutes just to last one week for emergencies?

We just came to the US for the summer and our Korean cell phone doesn't work here. My husband went to a cell phone place and asked how to get temporary service for the summer. He ended up buying a cheap cell phone (about $100) and buying phone cards to load it with minutes. There must be cheaper phones available but that was the cheapest one at the place where he went.

Call Tracfone...they will be able to tell you.
FYI, I've had a Tracfone for a few years now--love it! Since I only use a cell phone for emergencies or important contact, it doesn't pay for me to have a contract-type cell phone. In my area, Tracfone uses Cingular towers--and because I'm paying "premium" for the minutes (via the cost of the air-time cards vs. a contract plan), my phone call gets first/top/fast service on the towers. My DH has Cingular but on one of their lower costs plans--his signal is constantly bumped off the tower. He went to Cingular and was told that's how it works. (In our home, on the lowest floor, my Tracfone has good signals...his cell phone has no signal at all.)
I, too, will be vacationing this summer in an area were even the Tracfone will not have service. Since it's at a State Park, we feel comfortable that we will be able to get emergency help quickly. However, I will have 6 epis with us...just in case.

I talked to the guy in Staples today and he said I have to actually buy the phone in NH in order to use their towers. Apparently NH has very few cell providers. He's pretty sure if I buy it here in MA, it won't work on NH towers.

Not much to add, but do want to confirm that we were in NH for a week last summer (Mt. Washington area) and I had no coverage the entire time.
Good luck! You are so smart to look into it early.

did you check with tracfone? They have a huge coverage area and you can set any zip code as your 'home area' so no roaming. Right now they're having a deal where if you buy a 100 min card for $30 you get a free phone and if you sign up under an existing tracfone user you get an additional 100 minutes for free.

A friend just told me Target sells phones loaded with minutes. It would have been cheaper than the one we got through Motorola, but I don't know the exact price. Good luck.

I bought a Tracfone in NH and had it activated up there. Tracfones are expensive but it worked.
