Hello All:

I just found out my DD's allergist is no longer working due to illness, Dr. Gold. He was very good and specialized as a pediatric allergist. I hope everything works out for him. Can anyone recommend an allergist? My DD has multiple food allergies as well as severe eczema. I am in the GTAA, but willing to go anywhere for a good allergist. How are the allergist out of MacMaster Hospital in Hamilton?

My children saw Dr. Peter Vadas who is an associate of a highly respected allergist in Toronto (whose name I cannot remember at this time, but I know he works out of St. Michael's Hospital).
Perhaps someone else will remember his name. He is on the board of Anaphylaxis Canada and also was the person who did the study a couple of years ago on European chocolate.
Best wishes!

Dear ATM
Thanks! What I liked about Dr. Gold was that he was extremely cautious. He gave us all the information, ie getting rid of carpets, the march of allergies etc. We could choose to implement them or not. Since my DD has severe eczema and multiple food allergies, we have done everything he suggested. Thanks for responding I appreciate it.

chuser, I'm still trying to remember the name of *the* doctor in Toronto.
I'm going to check the Anaphylaxis Canada website and see if I can find his name. My mind has gone blank

chuser, okay, now I'm more dazed and confused than usual.
I checked the Anaphylaxis Canada website at www.gosafe.ca and saw that Dr. Gold is on their board. I also saw that Dr. Peter Vadas is on it as well.
I wonder if it's Dr. Peter Vadas I'm speaking about? I was fairly clear that my children saw Dr. Vadas, but perhaps it was an associate.
But no, it's Dr. Vadas I am thinking of and he does work out of St. Michael's Hospital as far as I know.
Best wishes!

Perhaps too far away but in Ottawa, ON is Dr. Anthony Hampong - fantastic. Alot of articles published, etc. A very good doctor as well as an advocate for allergy awareness. He deals with my PA's allergy and asthma.
Good luck.

Scott's Mom, depending on how often chuser's children have to see the allergist, Ottawa might not be that bad. I took my daughter a couple of weeks ago from Toronto to Ottawa for eye surgery and it was four hours on the train (very nice ride).
I came home and was looking at the paper and saw wonderful seat sales for the airlines and realized we probably could have flown there cheaper and even faster.
So, again, depending on how often the children have to see the allergist.....

Dear ATM & Scott's Mom
Thanks for the replies, I called Anaphylaxis Canada, and they said they heard through the grapevine that alot of Dr. Gold's patience were being referred to Dr. Hummel. He is as well an advisor to Anaphylaxis Canada, is linked to Sick Kids, and is teaches at U of T's medical school. Maybe Dr. Vadas worked with Dr. Hummel? I would anywhere for a good allergist. I am afraid to fly with my DD because she has a sesame and peanut allergy. I know Air Canada serves sesame biscuits on some flights. ATM (hope you do not mind that I abbreviate your name) how was the train? Any peanuts/nuts/sesame/sunflowers etc.
Again thanks for the information. The farther along this PA / Eczema journey the more is discover the best source of advice / information is from other parents/
regards,
Claudia

chuser, not being much of a traveller, I had the rare experience (therefore, for me) of train traveling twice in a couple of weeks.
I did a one-way with both kids (one PA, one non-PA) from Belleville to Toronto. We packed our own snacks and drinks and didn't have to buy anything to have while on the train trip (and I think it was two hours max).
Then, nine days later, I was back on the train with my non-PA daughter for the four hour journey to Ottawa and back again three days later.
I had NO PA issues whatsoever on either trip. They do come around in Economy class twice during the trip to Ottawa (once in the Belleville trip) selling alcoholic drinks, pop, coffee, perhaps milk, water. They also sold sandwiches which I wouldn't have felt okay buying (probably "may contain") and also chocolate bars. But no blatant peanut chocolate bars either, there was the "may contain" Mars bar, but that's it.
Our trip home from Ottawa was absolutely packed (mid-day) and even though I was traveling with my non-PA daughter, I still keep my eyes open for PA things, and again, no concerns whatsoever.
You do have to keep in mind, however, that people can bring food on the train with them which *could* pose a problem.
We came to Toronto at March break by bus and had an incident on the way home on the bus with peanuts being eaten and having to move to the front of the bus "just in case".
So, you may get a seat where the people in front, behind, or across the aisle from you are eating something that you're not okay with and you may have to move, but honestly, I didn't see much eating going on during the trip. My daughter, I had purchased McDonald's for on the train trip there and Burger King on the way home. I liked it better when we had the stuff already made like we did for our trip from Belleville to Toronto - less junky, but that's what was do-able for me at the time.
I thought four hours on the train *might* be horrific (I've done four hours on the bus from Belleville to Ottawa), but I have to say, it's a really nice, smooth way to travel.
Best wishes!

All of the paediatric allergists who work out of Sick Kids Hospital are pretty good. My PA daughter has been going to the allergy clinic there for about 5 years now and we see whoever is on call that day. They only see patients out of Sick Kids on Wednesdays and also have private practices elsewhere. I also know a lot of people who have seen Dr. Hummel either at Sick Kids or at his office (I beleive it's located near Bayview and Finch). They have all said he is excellent. If you do choose to go to to the allergy clinic at Sick Kids, you will have to get a referral letter from your family doctor and appointments are usally booked within 4 months.
By the way Cindy, you are right, it's Dr. Vadas who did the study on European chocolate and he is the head of Allergy and Immunology at St. Michael's Hospital.
