There was a story on Global news tonight about a girl who died at school in the Ottawa area after eating lunch at the cafeteria (she had an epi pen but it was in her locker.. not with her).. I'll try to find out more on-line as I just caught the end of the story.. maybe there will be more on the late night Global news at 11. erik, it *should* have been the Sabrina Shannon story that you heard tonight. There was a media conference at CHEO in Ottawa to-day and her parents were in attendance. If you look under Media, I posted the Anaphylaxis Canada Media Release (it was called something else) and if you check the thread started by katiee re Sabrina's death, there is more information in there as well about to-day's media conference.
I'm pretty sure that was the same story.
I'm not 100% sure but I think Anaphylaxis Canada was doing it not only in memory of Sabrina but because it's Life Threatening Food Allergy Month here in Canada.

I would also expect it to be the Sabrina Shannon story.. Otherwise it would be a really really unlucky coincidence. Kids don't die that often, and to have one do just that, in the same city, on the day of the news conference... It's not impossible, but not highly probable either.

Yes, I find encountering someone or another parent dealing with a milk allergy [i]very humbling[/i].
erik, yes, I believe it was some kind of milk cross-contamination. I would find most every other food allergy extremely difficult to deal with. PA I find relatively easy in comparison and when people have said something to me about the difficulty of PA, I've always said that I would find it harder if my child had a milk or egg allergy.
Even in thinking about sesame seed allergy, like Anna Marie and Nick have (and certainly others posting here, oh, Going Nuts' son), I would find that hard as well because bread itself would be off limits for the most part.
I think with PA the difficult part is the residue thing and how it lasts on surfaces for so long. Otherwise, well, you've done it for years, dear man, I do find it do-able to avoid foods with peanuts and as we do, tree nuts as well.
