This is in Edison, NJ. We sat on the sushi table but we ordered from their main menu. We ordered teriyaki steak for my son. They prepared it separately because they use peanut oil on their salads and I'm concerned about cross-contamination. The service was good and the server was very helpful.

We eat at Benihana w/ PA /TNA dd all the time. They cook with sunflower oil on the tables.
I think that their answer was a complete one and if your child does not normally eat or has had a problem with certain types of butter, soy sauce etc... you might want to check them out before you go - but all of the things listed are within our comfort zone.

DW and I do not go out to eat by ourselves.
But when we do (1-2X/year) [img][/img]
Shes careful with where we go (anaph to peanuts). That being said, shed probably pass on these type of places.
Reason? No. Shed rather not, for fear of ANY x-contam (Shes also avoiding shellfish, and those places serve shrimp too, right?)
Better safe than sorry.

We were so happy to find out that our local Benihana-type Japanese restaurant doesn't use nuts, or nut oils. We go there about every three months and my dgtr LOVES the show and the food! However, we went to one in Florida and they had "vegetable oil" and couldn't describe it further, so we left.
Each place is different.

Do you recall which location in Florida you went to? I may be going to the Orlando restaurant. I will call ahead of time and check on the products that he was unsure of. I am the one with the allergy so I don't have to worry about making decisions for my child. And luckily, knock on wood, I am only PA so that is the only cross-contamination I have to worry about. Thanks for the encouragement!!

It wasn't a "Benihana". It was'nt a chain either, just a place in Sarasota.

My PA child loves this restaurant. We have asked about peanuts several times, and get consistent answer that they do not use peanuts or peanut oil at that location. Never a problem so far, has eaten there about 8X or more. This would be the Benihana location in Cupertino, CA.
If you are avoiding shellfish you should pass on this restaurant as it is used on every teppan grill all the time.

We eat at Benihana with our PA son. We generally trust Japanese restaurants, but ask about peanut use first. I personally have yet to find a strictly Japanese restaurant (not one of those Chinese/Korean/Thai combo type places) that has peanut products. (Someone has posted about a sushi place that uses peanuts, but that may be the exception to the rule.)

Peanuts are not something that is traditionally used in Japanese cuisine. By what I can tell, they were fairly recently introduced the Japanese diet, and are used mostly in snack mixes.
My mom's family is Japanese, and my husband and his family are Japanese, and collectively, we have never been to an authentic Japanese restaurant where peanuts are in any of the dishes. Granted, we live in California, where there are probably more Japanese restaurants that somewhere in the midwest.
If Jason was just PA, I wouldn't worry a lot about Japanese restaurants.

Has anyone asked if they use any nuts at all (almonds, almond oil, or cashews potentially cooked in peanut oil)?

I'm willing to bet that a lot of those are flagged because they contain soy. I know for certain that Heinz ketchup is peanut free, as well as Kikkoman soy sauce. The mirin should be fine too, as long as you're not also gluten intolerant. The Takara plant is about 20 minutes away from here, and they only make sake and mirin.
