Telephoning Disney World chefs

I called five different Walt Disney World restaurants today, as instructed by the Disney dining reservation agent, to let them know about peanut allergy. In the past I've gotten right to a chef. This time every chef had a voice mail box.

The Kona Cafe chef's voicemail even had a statement that you should just tell your server when you arrive at the restaurant to bring out the chef of the day, and they can handle your allergy then. Of course, you could leave a message if you felt your situation required a call back.

They must be getting a lot more special dietary requirement calls than in years past.

Hmmm...that is interesting. I had to leave a voicemail once and got a call back from the chef. He left me a message stating how the kitchen worked and, as long as our only concern was peanuts/tree nuts, to mention it to the chef the day we go. I think the real issue in contacting them in advance is when you have a milk, egg, wheat (for example) allergy that requires special food purchases or preparation. Generally, peanut and tree nut just require they NOT cross contaminate.

Yes, dessert was the reason we contacted the chefs ahead of time. For instance, at the Contemporary, all the baked good type desserts for all restaurants were made in the same area. That area has walnut and pecan flour - I spoke to the head pastry chef and she did not feel comfortable that they could eliminate all cross-contamination issues. They accomodated by making my son's cupcakes right in the California Grill, and avoided the bakery area completely. That was part of the reason we ate there multiple nights. If I had not called ahead, there may not have been dessert choices that were completely safe. In my case where DS will only eat the main meal because it's the only way he can have dessert, I wanted to be sure there was dessert.
Another thought - some places they did have a choice that was safe - but it was some fancy item he would not even think of trying - so, arranging the exact dessert ahead of time was something I did for the whole trip. We love Disney!
