Hi, I have only posted once so far but I love reading this site. It makes me not feel so alone. For those of you who do not know me, I have a 2 1/2 year old son with a severe peanut allergy (tested 5 on RAST test). I feel like I always have a silly question, but here goes?
I have several recipes that use cream of mushroom, french onion soup, and beef and chicken broths. I checked the Campbell's soup "thread" but really didn't get a definitive answer. Has anyone ever used these soups with their PA child and been OK?
The second question I had is concerning spices? Are there a specific spices(other than nutmeg) that you do not use? In particular, chile powder?
If anyone has used these things before safely, I would appreciate knowing. Thank you so much for your time in responding.

I've never had my son react to spices or Campbell's soup. However, if he had a problem with other legumes like beans and peas, I likely wouldn't have him eat it.
Also, he's never had a problem with nutmeg. Perhaps it's not a high protein nut.

Nutmeg is not a nut, that's why no reaction.

My son has never reacted to any spices. He will not eat campbells soups, so that has never been an issue for us.

Hi! Don't ever feel like your questions are silly!!
I cook with Campbell's Cream soups (mushroom, chicken and celery). I use Lipton's Onion soup mix and the Beefy onion(?...something like that). I have not had trouble with any spices, and freely use chili powder. I use Kroger brand chicken and beef broths.
Hope this helps! And welcome!
Oh, by the way, I was a contributor to a Campbell's thread, questioning their safety, but we have since decided that my son's reaction was more than likely a cross-contamination issue in my own kitchen with eggs. He was highly allergic to eggs at the time and I had made some for my daughter. I am cautious with Campbell's, but have never had a problem with these particular items.

Be safe,

I have started making my own cream of soup base. Dd has too many allergies to find a safe soup. After dd had a reaction to a store brand soup, soy protien was peanut protien, I am very careful. I make all our soups. Nutmeg is a seed, that is why we don't use it either.

My son eats Campbell's chicken and noodle soup and I have cooked green bean casserole with Campbells cream of mushroom soup and he ate some of that with no problem. It seems like I made him tomato soup before but I cannot remember if he actually ate it. I use nutmeg all the time with no issues.

Re: Spices, I have spoken with the McCormick company about spices and they are VERY aware. ALL McCormick DRY spices and seasoning packets (chili mix, meatloaf mix, etc) are safe. HOWEVER they offer some liquid products (gravy, sauces, etc) that should not be considered safe; this is because they get some ingredients from outside vendors and can't be sure. They are working with their vendors to identify possible sources of contamination and hope to offer allergin information on ALL products. MEANWHILE, remember, if it is McCormicks brand and DRY, it should be safe.
hope that helps.

I don't use Campbell's soups because, at least the last time I looked, they had "modified food starch" listed as an ingredient in many of their varieties. I did notice recently, though, that Progresso indicates that it has been acquired by General Mills and has begun to use GM allergy labeling. I specifically checked a can of cream of mushroom last week, and would be willing to use it based on what I know of GM and their labeling & manufacturing practices.
As for spices, I trust McCormick's dry spices and seasoning mixes, and steer clear of others. As you may have noticed, I have a fairly tight comfort zone, but we only have one food allergy to deal with around here.
