Japanese restaurants

I am a constant lurker and infrequent poster but I am needing some info. Have any of you eaten at a Japanese restaurant with your PA child(ren)? If so, did you have any problems? We have a great one where I am but I am terrified to take my DS. I appreciate any help!

I was in a very upscale Japanese restaurant in Manhattan on a business trip.
I wouldn't eat anything because of all the raw fish....just looking at it ruined my appetite.

Hi HBSmom. We've taken my son (PA/TNA) to 2 Japanese restaurants. He usually has the rice and Chicken Karage or Yakitori. He's also tried a cucumber roll. DS doesn't have a soy allergy, so he has the soy sauce sometimes.
We know the owner of one and he is very aware of my sons allergy, so he double checks everything.
There was a thread awhile ago - I don't have time to do a search - but some posters have expressed concern re: the marinades/sauces/salad dressings in Japanese restaurants.
Japanese cooking uses a lot of soy and sesame, I've rarely seen peanuts used. I guess its a "comfort zone" thing. We feel comfortable at this particular Japanese restaurant, but we don't ever go out for Chinese food with DS.

I have eaten at Japanese restaurants many times. I have never found a Japanese restaurant here in Toronto that uses peanuts at all, so I would consider Japanese food quite safe.
However, they often use sesame oil, so if you have a sesame allergy it is off limits.

we love sushi and make it at home for the kids. it turns out great at home! When we eventually go to a restaurant, we will go to a sushi bar. There are no nuts on sushi bars that i know of. Just egg sometimes......will go soon to check it out on an off day with the manager. will repost

Thanks for the replys!! My DS is PA only so anything other than nuts is usually OK. My comfort zone is pretty big (maybe I need to be a little more cautious but so far we've only had 3 reactions the last being almots 2 yrs ago). I am curious if you've eaten from cooking tables or did they bring your food from the kitchen? I've read Japanese food usually does not use peanuts but I am hyper sensitive to the issue. I'd love to take him. I love sushi and Oriental food and since Chinese is out I'd love to be able to do Japanese! I am encouraged to talk to the restaurant in question and hopefully we'll be able to eat there. I'd like to say "thanks" to everyone who posts constantly as I use these boards as my ultimate reference. I learn more here than anywhere else, so THANK YOU!

Yes.. I think Japanese should be fine - I have never been to a Japanese restaurant that uses peanuts. Just be sure to ask the cook/manager before you go to be safe.. enjoy the food! [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img]

My dd loves Japanese food. The only thing that we've ever known to be off limits is the salad dressing: some restaurants use peanut butter. Actually, that was my one "screw up" while pregnant with my second child. Dh and I went out alone to Japanese. I couldn't get over how much I absolutely loved the salad. (I am a closet pb lover, I admit!) We found out later - when we had dd with us and asked - that they use pb. No wonder it tasted so darn good... I called several Japanese restaurants in my area and they said they have no peanuts or tree nuts and have been thinking of taking the next step of going in to talk face to face with the manager/owner, if I get the feeling there is a true understanding of the allergy and their ingredients in their menu then it may be worth a try. I think I'll ask at the next support group if anyone has tried any of the restaurants in the area.

I can see how the sushi and grilled/teriaki type stuff would be okay, but what about all the deep fried stuff? Do they use peanut oil? I haven't inquired into any Japanese restaurants in my area yet. I guess I just assumed that all those deep fried vegetables and rolls were cooked in peanut oil. I watch the Iron Chef quite frequently on the Food Network and I thought they've mentioned using peanut oil when they are doing deep fried stuff.
