Momma2boys,
I know you think I'm sitting here waiting to post, but truthfully, just came in to check a few threads after doing email and you had posted...
The training issues are probably going to be determined according to your state education laws. I would wait until you are at a meeting, which will probably be soon. Ask it as one of your concerns...Who will be trained, how will the training be done and by who, and then ask can anyone refuse training? If the answer is yes, I would ask what happens then, if the answer is I don't think so, tell her you would like to know what exactly the law states and what are the policies if someone does refuse.
But it looks like you have a concerned and knowledgable team, maybe it won't come to someone refusing...Best of luck to you and continue to keep us up on what happens.

Yep. My turn:
I'm in complete agreemnt w/ Lana. (What's new?) Not to ignore the feedback you're getting from your school, but just stay on track of the "tried and true" path of the 504 process. Don't get side-tracked by the nurse (or anyone) thinking out loud. They don't know yet, she may be right or wrong, they just don't know. Don't worry about those content issues...yet. It would be (IMHO) a waste of your time and energy to be concerned w/ it at this point.
I'm also in complete agreement w/ the approach (ask questions) that Lana suggests. This is the reason Lana is so on point about educating yourself about the laws is because it will show you the right questions to ask. By asking questions (especially the "right" questions), you will keep the communication open and on-going. This is your goal, because with open communication I believe the law will prevail and to your favor.
momma2boys, I'm taking a respite from the boards for a while. Please feel free to contact off boards (my email is in my profile) as I'm very interested in helping you thorough the rest of your process if you'd like. You can reach me at home. Gail,
I hope that you will return very soon, although I hate to see you take a reprieve at all.
Reprieves are healthy.
Gail, I will definitely keep in touch with you. Thank you so much for all your support and good advice, you will be missed even if you're only gone a short time. Have a good break!
Lana, same goes for you, thanks so much for your help, emails, support. I wouldnt have known what to do without your help.
I told my husband that it amazes me how much people are willing to go out of their way to help me. And you dont even know me. Some people wont even go out of their way to help a friend.
Thank you soooo much.
OK Gail, now we are posting at the EXACT same time!!! How funny.
hello, if anyone is still reading this I have a couple more questions. Im still a little unclear on how this process will go from here. I got the forms to authorize all the screenings to proceed with 504. They are signed and in , they have a copy of his physical and I need to get the drs. letter on May 23rd.
Now, all the stipulations that are in the 504, do we sit down in a meeting together and decide, or do I give them the list of what I want and they decide if they approve it or is it only stuff in the drs letter?? I really have no clue.
What I was planning on doing is going through some sample 504s and typing up a list of the accomodations I would like to take to my dr and ask him which he thinks are needed. So should I ask him to just include in his letter?
Im not really sure the best way to go about it to get the most out of my drs letter. And how in depth does his letter need to be? Sorry so many questions but I figure its easier to just do it right and not have a major battle later. Thanks for any help.
Hi momma2boys,
I'm thinking that I might take a different approach if I were you. I hope Cam's Mom has a chance to ring in her opinion on this too... I think you should take it one step at a time. The next step is to get a letter that would qualify your son for the 504 designation... not the specific accommodations themselves.
At this time, I would not share this information w/ our doctor. Instead, I would share with him that you are working with the school to create an "accommodation plan" and that his letter is very important in order for you to begin meeting with the school to make a plan. Personally, I would only explain that his letter is important and that the school will need to know a couple specific things: E.g a brief history, that the allergy is "life-threatening", the "life function affected is breathing", etc.
I would not start talking about the specific accommodations with him or the school... yet. Just focus on getting the designation. Then the "negotiations" can begin.
Check Rhonda's site to see what key words and phrases the doctor can use in his letter that the school will need.
Personally, that's how I'd handle it. I'd hate to see your doctor begin giving his recommendations for accommodations to the school (in his letter) if they aren't ones you want!
Gail
Momma2boys,
Hey! It seems that the school is really working in your favor. Since they have already given you all the info they are suppose to! I contacted my school on Jan 20th, 1st 504 request was given on Feb. 10th, then Dr's letter along with our 2nd 504 request on April 10th and I have yet to hear or recieve anything (except 2 calls from the nurse w/nothing of importance) and here we are 4 months later still at square one!
But to your situation...I ditto what Gail has said. Don't go into specifics with the Dr., if he asks what it is you are trying to do, tell him that you have a few accommadations that are neccessary for your son to attend school. I had emailed you a copy of our letter and a list of things that are pertinent in the letter a while back, if you need me to email them again please let me know. Two examples I followed in them were Rhonda's and Ryan's Mom letters.
The only thing I would add that Gail hasn't suggested is I would prepare a Proposed Peanut Allergy Management Plan, make several copies to give to each person in attendance at the 1st meeting, or you could ask the 504 Director if she would like a copy ahead of time. Explain that it will help to start the dialog of your son's 504. This will also give you something to follow yourself in the meeting and you are not relying on memory.
Remember that the Dr isn't the one and only voice in this. Its a team effort and the school doesn't rely on one person's input. You are as equal in the team as anybody, no one has a higher influence, and this includes your Dr.
The Proposed PA Management Plan is here in the schools forum, its lengthy and will require some thought from you as to what you want included, but I HIGHLY suggest it. You will be able to think about what your son's needs are ahead of time and not when you are across the table from a bunch of people. I will re-raise it for you.
Good luck, girl! I am so glad that your school seems more on top of things than mine! If you need anything else let us know.
Lana
See guys, I told you I was lost in this process. Ok, I personalized Rhondas letter and printed it out for my new dr. I think I will take it with me and not mail ahead since hes never seen my child and I dont want to overwhelm him into thinking Im a pain before he ever sees us.
I also printed out the proposed peanut allergy management plan. My husband and I are going to go through the sample 504 s I have and decide what we would like and type up that list.
So I will get the letter from the dr. and do all the screenings. Then I take my list and put it into the proposed plan and take it to 504 meeting and we all decide together what gets put in?
Now after the initial letter from the dr. will I need another one for accomodations? Are there certain things that are more likely to get put in if the dr requests them?
Lana, Im sorry your school isnt being very cooperative. I know that with our special ed office you have to be very persistent. I cant believe what I had to go through just to get my older son speech services. Everyone just kept telling me not to back down and just keep on them.
I think one of the things helping me is that I am already so active in the school and close to the principal and her words helped alot. Like they say its who you know. Well I hope they come through for you. Its hard when you know the school year is coming to an end and who knows what will get done over the summer. Good luck, and thanks again to you both.
