A great (safe) day at a baseball game - it is possible!

Just letting you know about some good news... with so many of us being met with negativity at school, special events, etc.

My son's 1st grade class was scheduled for a field trip to our local baseball team's ballpark for a day - a tour and then a chance to see a whole game. How wonderful for the kids, except mine... the one with a severe peanut allergy. No way was he going to go to a place filled with peanut shells!

So, I decided after telling my boy that he would probably not be able to go, to just call the team and see what they had to say about sponsoring a "peanut-free" day. Well, to my great astonishment they said, "no problem, we'll just pull peanuts from the concessions for the day!" [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img]

Amazing, I was armed with a speech and I didn't even need to use it! I only explained that my son has never had the opportunity to go to a baseball game - ever. They were wonderful! The West Michigan White Caps (affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) are a hit with our family.

The White caps organization went out of their way to make it a safe day for my son, and for some other PA kids who were there. They totally cleaned the stadium, even hosed down the place, removed the peanut-roasting equipment, removed the peanuts from the concessions, removed the ice cream bars and caramel apples with nuts as well as pulled their Baby Ruth and Reese's PB cups. They posted signs saying, "No peanuts today!" and had cards behind the concessions to give people that may have complained of the abscence of peanuts.

What a wonderful day my son had! I am so grateful for the tremendous understanding and effort the Whitecaps had for just one PA fan! They informed our local media and my son was on the front page of our paper and on 2 local newscasts that night. Everyone recognized what an effort this was, and a worthy one at that!

They are now planning on this being an annual event at the stadium! YES! [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/biggrin.gif[/img]

Wow! That is fantastic. Your story may help more of us get our local teams to do such a day for our children. Thanks for posting it! Hoe cool for your son to be in the paper. It is just the type of media coverage that makes others take this seriously. becca

How wonderful!
I have taken Manuel to one game with general seating and was a nervous wreck the whole time. The next time we had a skybox so I thought it would be better. Wrong!! I would like to send this along to our local team if it is okay with you. Manuel loves baseball and is devastated he can't go back. Maybe seeing that others have done it would show our stadium they could do it and survive.
