In a post under schools there was (again) discussion about how everything revolves around food. Yet, there seems to be so much concern about children being overweight.
When dealing with food allergies we often have to avoid the food part of socialization and I'm wondering if this is apparent in size.
Is the person(s) in your family with pa overweight? underweight?
____________
I tend to be underweight and have to work at keeping on about 10 pounds, otherwise I'm sick every fall and spring.
Neither of my kids (one PA, the other not) have a weight problem and I'm only about 90 lbs. myself. Truth be told, however, most people who eat the way we do probably would be overweight - we just have skinny genes.
Anna Marie, I can relate to the struggle to keep the 10 lbs. on, I have to work at it too. It can be hard to balance healthy eating habits with taking in enough calories. If I let my guard down it falls off just like that. Then I start to feel really run down, and look like a concentration camp escapee.

I have "skinny genes" too. I suffered "skinny" teasing in school but my revenge is now I can eat all I want and not gain (even though I'd still like to put on 10 lbs) and after PG I lose my weight right away. My PA child (3) is ULTRA picky about food but so far in 50 percentile weight. She eats very little and I worry it will catch up to her. My other child is 18 months and eats everything in site, has a very stocky build (a boy. My PA child is a girl.)
My pa daughter is right on target, but my pa son is a bit underweight. I think it may be bacause he is not still for more than 60 seconds. He really does eat a lot for a little fellow his size.
I am about the right weight I think... definitely not overweight.. if anything, I am too slim. I have always had a high metabolism.
I have always had a fast metabolism as well. Hoping that the kids will take after me on this one. Pa DS isn't overweight but he's always been big for his age. He is, I believe, starting to level off a bit.
His feet right now are almost as big as mine are. His toes defintely are as big as mine. I think he's just going to be a big kid.
I certainly don't have a problem with keeping 10 pounds on . My PA ds is just under the 50th percentile for weight, and at the 50th for height. He's skinny, but not underweight. My KNA dd on the other hand, has been over the 100th percentile for height since birth, and right now is in the 80th for weight.

My oldest PA son is small for his age and a little skinny, but basically height-weight proportionate. Both his parents (me and his dad) are a little heavy!
The second-oldest PA son is average size for his age and thin but not skinny. He has never actually had a reaction.
PA dd is tall and slim. (95th% for height and 50th% for weight, and that was a big leap this year from 25th for weight). I no longer think she is so slim that it is worrisome, but she has been there, and is very picky about food choices. However, her food choices are not low fat or healthy if left to her own! Generally a very small appetite as well.
I have no idea how it will bear out when she is older. She eats such small portions I fear she might actually get to be an unhealthy weight when she gets to an age where I have less control! But I don't sweat it now. Dh's family are generally slim and light eaters. becca
So far, we don't have any pa's who are overweight. Do you think this is partly due to avoiding so much of the socialized eating?
For me personally, I can eat anything and it's not going to put on weight. I force myself to eat healthy food for the vitamins, then pig out on candy, cookies, whatever.
People have referred to high or fast metabolism. Since this is an individual's chemical reaction to food (sound accurate?), and a food allergy is an individual's chemical reaction to food, do you think they are related?
DD got my genes, alas.
She is above the 95%th percentile for weight and at the 95%th for height. Great (said sarcastically).
