darthecleo,
my dtr is only allergic to peanuts, positve thru bldwork and skin test. been positve for about 4 yrs now. the only smarties i am aware of are the ones that come in the little indiv. wrapped packages maybe the ones we have in the U.S. are diffrent from canada? and i'm not sure if nestles makes these ones. i was told by a friend that they use peanut oil to make them because it has a longer shelf life and they last longer in the packages. so now i am really confused on this little treat. ~~~~jordan's mom

Hi Jordan's Mom,
The Nestle Smarties and the Ce De Candy Smarties (Rockets) are both made in peanut-free facilities (I eat them both frequently) and there is no peanut oil in either product - they have always been peanut-free.
Maybe it is a different type of candy that is coming in an individually wrapped package that contains peanut oil? I know these products do not contain any peanut oil. Are you sure they are called Smarties? Is there any other info on the packaging such as which company manufactures this product?
Smarties have always been made in a peanut-free facility, so maybe the allergy was due to artificial food colouring or some other ingredient in the product? Artificial colouring reactions are becoming more common these days.

hi erik,
after careful investigating... i unwrapped a smarties wrapper and read the teenie tiny print and it is indeed made by the ce de candy company!! one of the nurses where i work helped me enlarge the writing with photocopier!! i am sooooo relieved and it says made in canada!! yahooo a friend had told me they had peanut oil..wont be listening to that advice again..jordan will be so happy and she was tested for food coloring reactions and none so far so the only thing i can think of is i might have eaten something that contained a residue of peanut..i try to be very careful. and i kissed her. thank you so much for your help..smarties here we come!!! jordan's mom :O)
