pDH is talking about a job transfer and Alabama and Georgia keep coming up as possibilities. My 9 year old PA son was researching those states and became quite alarmed at peanuts being a major crop. I worry about boiled peanuts being served everywhere. I have never been in the south so I have no idea how prevalent peanuts are. Can anyone help?/p

I don't have any statistics for you but we do travel to the south quite a bit and I have noticed that the restaurants seem to prefer to fry in peanut oil.
We live in Mississippi (right on the MS/TN state line just south of Memphis.) and I will have to agree that there are a lot of peanuts in the South. But I don't think that it is something that is just everywhere and unavoidable. They are boiled at a lot of fairs and vegetable stands. And served 'in shell' at several steakhouses. Some supermarkets sell them in bins right by the front door. But we just avoid those places just like the restaurants that don't have safe food prep practices. There are plenty of places where they won't be an issue. And as long as you are living in a subdivision in the city limits, not out in the country, you shouldn't have to worry about the peanut fields. (That sounds awfully sarcastic on paper. Please know I don't mean it that way.) Hope this helps and good luck! Let us know what ya'll decide.

I don't guess I've noticed the preference of frying in peanut oil. There are some like Chik-Fil-A and Steak Escape and I think Outback Steakhouse, but then there are Chili's, Applebee's, O'Charley's, and Wendy's who just use plain ol' safe veggie oil. Most of the BBQ joints are safe too.

I live in Georgia and its not too bad as long as you keep your son out of gas stations (as they all sell boiled peanuts) and watch out on weekends at WalMart for the occasional vendor that sells boiled peanuts. Other than that it shouldn't be a problem.

I live in Florida, and yes pnuts are everywhere, and there are alot more rest. that cook w/pnut oil than other oil, but mostly your seafood rests. They seem to sell them everywhere, but it hasn't created a major problem as long as we stay clear of where they are selling them, just limits your choices even more.
We do hunt some in GA on private land that a friend has alot of property leased for crops, as far as we know, he doesn't have any crops of pnuts, but we've agreed when we do kill something in GA that we will be giving the meat to someone else, just in case.
But we've lived here all of Cam's life and never encountered a problem due to it being everywhere.
Great question. We have lived in many states in the Southern US and I think that you do see peanuts more so than the midwest, at least. We live in VA, next to Suffolk where the Planters manufacturing plants are and we have been fine. We are one city away and we just don't ever go there. They have a huge peanut festival in the fall, sell peanuts everywhere, but we just don't go to those places. You are right, there are many places you can go safely, but Chili's does use peanut oil in a lettuce wrap, so beware....Go for the transfer, life might have wonderful things in store for you all there. I don't even realize it until I visit my parents in Pennsylvania that it hits me there are no peanuts. The state/county fairs are the worst but we still go and enjoy ourselves...we just don't eat there. Several restaurants are off limit but Outback Steakhouse isn't one of them here. Chick-Fil-A, Cheeburger, Logan's, and another steak restaurant that I can't recall, and a small local Greek restaurant that uses peanut oil in their pizza/spaghetti sauce. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the south if you do move.

Thanks so much for the reminder about the lettuce wrap. After I read your post I remembered that they did tell me that on the phone when I called. It is not something I would eat, so I forgot. But I need to keep it in mind in case we are out with friends! Thanks again!

Thanks for the replies. I have another question about boiled peanuts, since many of you say they are around at many places. Do they put out much odor? Do people eat them with their hands like roasted peanuts? I'm trying to imagine what kind of residue issues we might have. I'm sorry if I seem stupid about this, but I live in Washington state and have never seen such a thing - just heard of them.
