I wanted some feed back on this one.
I recently called a new outback in our area and talked to someone who said they were a day manager. I asked about the peanut oil of course, his reply we do not use it. He went on to tell me of a friend who died from the allergy on a trip, gee thanks I needed to hear that. Anyway he said they were safe.
My husband and I took my son about two weeks ago and this has been bothering me ever since.
We ordered our food which included fries with cheese for my son. When his food arrived I was hearing this inner voice I sometimes get nagging me to double check. I did not feel comfortable with him eating them. I again asked our waiter what oil do you use. I sent him in the kitchen to ask whoever was in charge of the kitchen to double check the oil. His reply when he came back was alarming peanut oil. Who would I even address about this?
He said they would make him a special dinner with no oils, guess wat the dinner arrived to the table with none other then french fries, again cooked in peanut oil. I am becoming afraid to take him out to eat. I feel like I am trusted others with my sons life and they certainly do not care as I do.

i hat very god repley with all the staff at the keg and they just dident only tell us everything we need to know they even ript all the labels of so we could read for are self i am very sadesfied with them and we go there now every time and sorry for you to have to deal with staff how have no knowlege of whats going on it shoes poor training

We ate at the Outback once. My son ended up in the restroom vomiting. We too asked and double checked. My son also has shellfish allergies so it could have been cross contamination. We won't be going there again.

We take our daughter out to eat very often, but we forbid her french fries/chips, anything deep fried, really. We figure it's bad for her anyway, and treat her to a dish of ice cream at home.

There's another post on Outback on this site. We ate there andthe chef told our waitress that the vegetables were the only thing unsafe for our son who is PA. Seemed bizarre, and we never went back with him.

I'm in London, Ontario, Canada and the Outback here are fine. My son has the chicken fingers with fries or the mac&cheese and has been fine. They even have the safe Chapman's ice-cream now because they are really peanut/nut-aware now.
That's London for ya!
All the kids party places are nut/free and the cakes are made that way to. My son gets to go to all of these parties and eat the cake because of this.
I love where I live because they do care here, and my son doesn't feel excluded.

I think this may be another case where the Canadian company/restaurant is safe and allergy aware, while the American company/restaurant is not safe/not allergy aware. They couldn't even serve Chapman's nut-free ice cream in the USA since it is only available in Canada.
So it sounds like Outback is not safe in the USA, but it is okay in Canada.

I would agree with you. After what happened to my son at an Outback in Pennsylvania I will not be going back.

I would find out who is above the day manager...probably the general manager, and lodge a complaint. You specifically asked if they used peanut oil. He told you specifically no. DUHHH. Someone who is working as a manager should either know the answer or find it out very quickly. If they can't guarentee you a peanut free meal they should at least be honest. Personally, I would write a letter to the general manager, and then go above their head if I didn't recieve a response I was happy with. At the very least, you should get a free meal out of it. (I don't think you'd want to take you son-I wouldn't, but maybe for you and DH)

I had a similar experience at Bugaboo Creek, which is the same type of restaurant as Outback. We were at a family gathering and the waitress came back from the kitchen and said my daughter couldn't eat anything! I talked to the chef and he ended up making her some plain boiled pasta with nothing on it. After all that, she didn't eat it anyway! Good thing!

Just wanted to share that we found outback manager to be very helpful in the one we went to in Annapolis, Maryland- my multiply food allergic child had french fries and steak. It was wonderful. DS is allergic to egg,P,TN,all shellfish and sesame seeds. We plan to go back again.
