Hi, I a mom of a 2 year old who is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, amongst other food allergies.WE first found out that he was allergic to nuts after he ate a piece of a gold brick egg last easter and his ear and the whole side of his face had swollen up.More recently we when eat at Logan's Roadhouse(you know the kind of restaurant that you can just throw peanuts around);I don't know what I was thinking I guess I wasn't .Well he didn't eat anything there ,but I guess from all the dust his lips were swollen and needed a breathing treatment when we got home. His allergist said to definetly avoid nuts, she didn't even do the skin pick for it when she tested for the other food.He tested positive for and we are to avoid completely:tree nuts ,peanuts, eggs, shellfish, beef, chicken, green peas, and mustard. And we can rechallenge pork, bannanas , chocolate , grapes. The funniest part is his allergist didn't think he would test positive for anything since he only needs rescue meds(for asthma) 3-4 times a month, unless he is sick then he needs more.I'm supposed to get him a medic-alert membership but I don't think I could get him to keep it on.any suggestions?

Hi, I too have the same question. I have a PA son who just turned 3 and I have been told several times by his allergist that he should be wearing his bracelet. He is about to begin a preschool program and I still have no clue how I am going to keep him from tring to pull it off. Someone suggested I purchase a Medic alert necklace charm and safety pin it to his shirt, but if his shirt is taken off then it's gone.
Sorry, I have no suggestions for you but I too would love to see some suggestions that worked for younger PA children.
Welcome Ally310 and Joyce S ! I don't have a lot of time to post - but my son was diagnosed when he was about a year and a half. We ordered him the stainless steel bracelet from Medic Alert( requesting an estra small bracelet). He played with it for a day or two, then never even noticed it was there. He couldn't get it off because of the clasp. Once, it fell off (when he was 5 ) - but luckily he found it.
I liked this bracelet - we didn't have to take it off for the bath/swimming - he hardly knew it was there.
Now he wears a sports band -( he's almost 8), which he can take on and off - and it gets quite heavy when wet.
You'll get lots of great information here!

I call my 2 year old son's sport band medic alert his "watch." I got his Daddy a sports watch and they put them on together every morning.
Good Luck.

My daughter started wearing her Medical Alert bracelet when she was 2 years old and has never had a problem keeping it on.
She never takes it off so there is never a discussion about wearing it.
My son has had his medic alert since hea was about 2 and has never been able to take it off. He doesn't even notice it.
I found a site this morning that sells Shoe tags. Has anyone ever seen or have any information on the effectiveness of something worn on their shoes. They do bear the medical emblem and look just like the necklace charm but it loops through the top of the shoe lace. I guess what my concern is will medical personel look on their shoes for medical information????

Syd's been wearing a medical alert bracelet since she was 9 months - she's 3 now. She loves to show it off to the paramedics, fire fighters and police officers - she'll show it to everyone in a uniform!
I picked up a couple of extra "shoe tags" from http://www.n-styleid.com/index.html as they were dead cheap but made of steel so strong and the engraving was dirt cheap as well. We put one on her runners and last visit to the hospital the triage nurse commented "isn't it great - you have head to toe coverage with your medical alert tags"
This is the first time any one other than her friends had even noticed the shoe tag, so I wouldn't use it as the only method. I'd definitely go with the wrist chain as your primary option. Cheers.
