Haven't seen any mention of this here, but check out The Food Allergy Network's homepage. There's a new ad campaign sponsored by FAAN and the American Academy of Pediatrics regarding the connection between peanut/tree-nut allergies and consumption of these foods by pregnant and nursing mothers and young children. The attention-grabber for these black and white ads are photos of celebrities and their babies. The first features actor Kevin Sorbo (of the Hercules and Andromeda series) and his son.

Finally! It's about time! Whenever I say this to people they look very skeptical. I wish I had known about this when I was nursing. We have a creepy home video of my entire extended family at a picnic--everyone is eating peanut butter sandwiches (including me) and my then-4-month-old nursing PA son is screaming hysterically through the entire segment. I couldn't figure out why he cried constantly, and had reflux and eczema. Seems so obvious now.
Better to give up peanuts for a year or so than to have to avoid them forever because of an allergy.
Since PA is one of the "causes" that hasn't gotten much celebrity attention or sponsorship over the years, I am especially appreciative of this campaign. I know there are a lot of people out there who will take the time to learn a little more about a cause simply because of celebrity endorsement. I'm watching for these ads to come out, and intend to send a letter of thanks to every celebrity who participates. I thought that maybe some of you would also like to do this, so I'm posting the address I received from Kevin Sorbo's fan club administrator. Mail can be sent to the studio in British Columbia when "Andromeda" resumes filming in April. Addresses can be found through www.sci-fi.com
Otherwise, they can be sent to the Los Angeles address for forwarding:

Excellent stuff! I'll have to check out the website. Wouldn't it be a *good* idea to have a female celebrity since she would ultimately be the pregnant and nursing one?
Kevin Sorbo, he can be dishy. I'll check out the site now.
Many thanks. Best wishes!

I posted about this in the Main Discussion forum a few weeks ago, during a different discussion about the Peanut Council and FAAN. I should have started this thread - oops, but I forgot! Here is a link to the actual ad, but you must have Adobe Reader to view it (just click on the link and try it - if you don't have Adobe Reader your computer will tell you. i noticed two characters mentioned on guiding light (the soap opera) that were PA today. maybe someone on that show would be willing to be a celebrity speaking out on behalf of those with PA. i don't follow soaps but if anyone does....maybe the show could be contacted for more info. also, it sounded like they may be working the topic of PA into their storyline somehow. joey
This is terrific news. I hope these ads get a lot of publicity. Miriam
