Are you a member of FAAN or do you visit their website to obtain information?/p
pI first received a sample newsletter. Then, because I really liked what I saw in that newsletter, I became a member. I love the newsletters, which I send to Jesse's school when I am finished with them. I also like the kids' newsletter that your child can receive./p
pNow I am particularly interested in their BE A PAL program and want to find out as much about it as I can so I can get what I want for Jesse going into Grade 1 next year./p
pI'm just wondering if anyone else is a member (I know there are a lot of people that are) or if you check their website at least./p

I am a member of FAAN. It is a wonderful organization. I enjoy their newsletters very much. I learned about FAAN when I called a manufacturer to ask about Kit Kat candy bars. They told me about FAAN and gave me the toll-free number. It's so great that FAAN works closely with food companies and gets the message out. We also receive the children's newsletter.
I've been to one of their conferences. I loved it. The luncheon buffet was great--each item on the buffet with a full ingredient list. We all kept saying, "If only the whole world were like this."
Is anyone going to the conference this year? I'm going to the Chicago conference in May. They have a breakout group mid-day for food allergic teens and another for parents of teens. A lot of issues come up in the teen years, and it's the time for handing over responsibility to the kid. I look forward to participating in the future, when my son is a teen. At this year's conference, I'm especially looking forward to hearing about the latest research updates for PA.
Sandra Y., I know it's a couple of months away yet, but I would love to see you post information about the conference after you've attended. I'm not even clear if they have any in Canada and even if they did it's highly unlikely that I would be able to attend. So, it would be great to see the information posted here (although my mouth is watering about the buffet lunch). I would certainly prefer to be going but for those of us who can't, it would be great if you posted.

I became a member after the recommendation from our allergist when Evan had his first appointment. I guess that would be 2 1/2 years now.

Deanna, we were basically posting at the same time! I think that it is absolutely wonderful that your allergist told you about FAAN. My soul, I was told nothing by three family doctors and one allergist. Excellent!
Also, same to you, if you do go to the conference, for those of us who can't go, it would be great to see something posted about it.

I have been a member of FAAN for probably 10 years. I found out about them on my own (no thanks to the allergist). They have been very helpful over the years. I feel the least I can do is be a paid member, since I do love their website and newsletters, and they can always use the money. I only wish they would have a conference in the Tampa area sometime! It would be great to take my 13 yr old and she could meet some kids with similar experiences.

Oh, I'm glad so many are interested in the conference. Of course, after I attend I'll be happy to post here.
I received my notice of the conference from FAAN. There's a brochure with all the info. If you're not a member call them--I'm sure they'd be happy to send the info to anyone who is interested.
My brochure lists three conferences:
Baltimore, March 31
Rosemont,IL (suburb of Chicago, near O'Hare airport) May 12
Rye Brook, NY June 16
Attendance is $75 per person ($65 for an additional family member, $55 per teen) and it's in a hotel, so special room rates are available.
The brochure is interesting. It lists the corporate sponsors--all the big names: Borden, General Mills, Hershey, Heinz, Keebler, Nabisco, Quaker, Sara Lee...(and lots more).

Our allergist gave me information on FAAN at our first visit, as did a friend who also has a PA child. I signed up immediately for 3 years (only partly because I am a lunatic... mostly because it's cheaper to get more years at once and it's not like DS is going to suddenly stop having PA). We've received our introductory mailing and I was pleased with all the information.
If I may add this in to this thread, I'd love to hear what folks found most useful to order from FAAN. Are those Allie the Elephant books as dorky as they sound, for example? [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img] How about the Flashbacks; are they good?

Unfortunately, those little books are pretty dorky, you're right. The illustrations are not quite up to par with what's available in children's books these days and the writing is not great. But we do have them and we even read them now and then, b/c I've never seen any other kids' books with food allergic characters. After we're done with them I'll donate them to our preschool library (our copies are in pristine condition since they don't get a lot of use!)
Miriam, if you think the Alexander the Elephant Who Couldn't Eat Peanuts books sound dorky, DEFINITELY stay way from buying, especially BUYING the book A Preschooler's Guide to Peanut Allergy. It was, IMHO, absolutely appalling and the illustrations were frightening! The parents actually looked angry at the child when they were discussing the allergy. I made the very big mistake of buying the book. I donated it to the school library.
I have had two Alexander books given to me.
Hey, brain wave happening (reverse of brain blip) - I do have one that I am finished with and I was going to send it to the school but they do have another Alexander book so perhaps you'd like me to send it to you? Let me know quickly please while I still have postage in my drawer!
The best book that I have seen and I actually haven't physically seen it (if that makes any sense) is No Nuts for Me. You should check out their website for the animated version of the book. I know that your guy is too wee but Jesse really loved it when we found it last year. Actually, if you end up telling me that you'd like the Alexander book, I could send you the information from that website too. It's good for children around 3+ because there's a puzzle to put together on-line, etc.

It is interesting, the woman that wrote the Allie books actually has her own website, [url="http://www.allergicchild.com"]www.allergicchild.com[/url] She is the one who has given me permission to post her question of the month on this site. Her website is quite good.
It's a funny thing though, I think once we find this website, although we may wander elsewhere to get certain information (i.e., printable information for schools, etc.), we kinda stick to this board, don't we?
It was only through this site that I recognized how important FAAN was and that's why I wondered if everyone did know about them (I didn't last year at this time).
