We have used fragrance free detergent for years, and never used fabric softener until recently. I tried some Downy stuff, but both my kids got really itchy from it (can't imagine why!), so I stopped. BTW, when my kids were little their eczema was so bad I had to buy a washing machine so I could put everything through an extra rinse cycle. I just stopped doing that about 2 years ago.

I am actually sitting here crying so much I am going to go crazy!!!! I have been using TIDE forever and my son always had those little bumps all over his body. It makes his skin feel very rough but it has never looked like excema. About a month or so ago I started using the Bounce fabric sheets and he has been itching like crazy!!!!!!! He takes his clothes off and scratches his body all over. I assumed that it was from a new 'allergy' but have been having trouble figuring out what food it could be. Now I am almost 100% sure that it is due to this. Thanks sooooo much...I am going to call the allergist tomorrow and let them know. I am so shocked and so upset. It really makes me sick.
Thank you to all for your comments. I have a 3 year old with peanut allergy. We have noticed the itching and rashes but never tied it to a particular item. I believe what you all have shared has answered another question for me and my family.
God Bless!

Thank you,
Nut Free and plan to be!
I have just recently noticed that every time my 2 1/2 year old gets out of the bath and I am drying her off with her towel, that within 3-5 minutes she starts to get hives on her (in various places-a few on her tummy, neck, legs, etc). We thought it could have been her bubbles or soap, but I have studied the labels and have not found any nut oils in them. I have been baffled...UNTIL NOW! We use Tide-but I just started using a Fragrence variety. AND I just started using dryer sheets. This discovery of Peanut Oil must be the reason she has been getting hives.
Gosh..I feel so bad for her that she has had to go through this after EVERY bath. I could just scream. What are the idiots at Proctor and Gamble thinking??????
Thanks for the heads up. You have solved my mystery around the house. Maybe I can make bathtime a little safer when I go out tomorrow and buy NEW detergent! THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Protect My Boy, welcome! I am one extremely angry woman right now. I did find arachide's post first under Alerts and Recalls so I posted there.
However, I think this is pure insanity. I consider Tide to be the best laundry detergent but I have actually been using Sears brand because it comes in a 192 load box at a relatively good price. I use Fleecy Vanilla Scented fabric sheets but know now that I'm going to have to check on them if Bounce uses peanut oil to distribute the scent. Fortunately, I don't use Downey but I always love the smell of people who do use it in their laundry.
I'm extremely p-o-ed. From what I've read, there are SEVERAL reactions that may have been caused by these items. Are they labeled? NO!
Is this something FAAN would even be aware of? Should everyone whose child or themselves have had a reaction contact FAAN and include it as a reaction to cosmetics/toiletries? From my cosmetic reactions thread and the response I got from FAAN I do know that they do want to hear about reactions to things.
My head is going to explode! I am just so angry. When I read something like this, and I am VERY thankful that you posted it, I think I've probably gone insane or else the rest of the world has. I just can't believe it. It's idiotic!

Of all the stupid, idiotic, thoughtless, insane.... This just really ruined my day. How could they put peanut oil in laundry detergent?! What were they thinking? Obviously they WEREN'T thinking. Or they had their heads up their giant corporate a$$.
I use Tide all the time. It is the best detergent on the market that I've found that keeps clothes (especially whites) from getting that grey, pastey look to them. Fortunately, I have been using Dreft on Patricia's clothes and double rinsing. Also double rinsing the bedsheets (those are washed in Tide).
I just bought another huge bottle of Tide. So I am going to return it first thing Monday and get the All that a lot of you have mentioned.
Well, I'm going to go vent some steam offline before I start typing something too profane.

So, are we all going to be calling the manufacturers of our detergents tomorrow morning?!?!? I will be. We use Wisk - always have.
Am I right in assuming, then, that only the Bounce with fragrance is a problem? That the unscented would be okay?? I'll call them tomorrow, just to be sure.
I found a webpage for feedback to Proctor & Gamble. You can select one of a number of items to comment on, including Tide and Downy. Interestingly, in a complete breakdown of their ingredients (go to the P & G homepage and type "ingredients" into the search engine on the left side of the page), peanut oil or any oil is not mentioned.
Here is the address for comments: http://app07.recipio.com/pg_com/product_feedback_new.html
Lam, I use Wisk also - Tide does work well, but some clothing (esp. jean) manufacturers do not recommend it because it works TOO well, breaking down the clothing fibres and causing the item to prematurely "age". I'm interested in hearing about Wisk - not that I've ever had trouble with any laundry products - just lucky, I guess.
Just did a bit more research - peanut oil is used in soap as an emulisfier - it creates a long-lasting lather. Nut oils are common ingredients in soaps - why didn't we think of laundry soap sooner?!
Mom to Cayley, in reading that peanut oil is used as an emulsifier, it would make sense that we should have thought of laundry soap before. However, I just think that we are overwhelmed enough with grocery shopping (and the whole long list of "may contains" "made ins") and now the cosmetics "thing" that this is just something we couldn't possibly have fathomed. I'm still reeling and extremely angry.
I know exactly what you are saying. Perhaps we should go through our homes and see what products we are bringing into them (for housecleaning, etc.) and make sure that they are safe. It does seem really overwhelming.
From Rilira's 504 Plan for her daughter Rachel, I did learn one thing, and yes, I should probably have questioned ANY soap (including laundry) at that time. I had to e-mail Jesse's principal to make sure that the soft soap in the dispenser at the school was "safe".
This just seems neverending, but at least when we all put our heads together we get the information we need (thank-you Mom to Cayley for the website link you provided) and start to question things that any normal person, PA parent or not, would not have thought to think about.
Best wishes!
