pWe are looking for support for a Connecticut Bill introduced to require insurance companies to cover medically necessary nutritional formula. Special formula isn't covered by insurance companies because it is "over the counter". Yet, the cost can run into hundreds of dollars per month for food allergic /

Connecticut Senate Bill No. 524 requiring insurance companies to cover medically necessary nutritional formula was signed into law on June 6 by Governor Rowland!
Thank you to everyone who helped get this law enacted! It will help 100s of families whose children have food allergies.

It was great to see this bill passed. Now two years later we have found out our 3rd child is allergic to milk and eggs. She is 19 months and on the low side for weight for her age. Due to the weight issue and the allergies the allergist and pediatrician say she should stay on formula for the present time. I contacted my insurance company and they are saying even though the doctor's are saying it is necessary since it is an over the counter formula they don't have to pay. The doctor is going to try asking for the insurance company's permission but they seem like they haven't done this before. They say the insurance company will review it-guess what the answer will be.
So is my understanding wrong- does the bill cover only formulas available by prescription???
I'm going to pursue this and see what happens.
