Does anyone know if Applebee's is safe? I have never eaten there, and there is a new one opening up very close to us. Also, is Arby's safe? What about Donato's pizza? Thanks for your help!

I've eaten at Applebees quite a few times and have never experienced any problems, same with Arby's. I'm not sure if Applebees has anything with peanuts on the menu - I assume some of the desserts have nuts. I can't recall anything with nuts and definitely no peanuts whenever I've been to Arby's. You should always ask your local restaurant to be sure since often things can vary by region or even individual location.

Hi PAGIRL,
I too have eaten many times at Applebees and Arbys with no problems. Applebees has wonderful salads!
No matter what restaurant I go to, I never order dessert just because they all usually have some form of nut and I just don't trust it, plus that is the best place to have a reaction. So I just stay away all together.
Take Care,
Melanie
One thing to remember is to always ask. I had eaten at an Applebees about 4 times with no problems and each time I asked they said they used Vegetable Oil, specifically a Soybean/Canola blend. Then one night my wife and I went there and I asked again. Turns out their normal supplier did not make their delivery and so they needed to do a replacement product. They ordered Peanut Oil and were using it in their fryers. The thing that worried me was the switch and the fact that there would probably be oil remaining in the fryer for awhile. I ate their again a few months ago and talked to the manager and they said that they had cleaned the fryers and haven't had to use PNUT oil since. JUST REMEMBER ALWAYS ASK, AND ASK THE MANAGER ALWAYS.
We've had no problems with Applebee's, but I really agree that it makes good sense to ask - each and every time. As a PA good friend of mine reminds me, always explain the situation to the manager...that makes it easier to reclaim medical expenses if (god forbid) you do have a problem.
Just a warning...I ate at Applebees last week with a friend and she ordered an Oriental Salad that was loaded with peanuts. Just a warning that they are back there in the salad area.
I have eaten at Applebee's alot because they are a safe place. The one in my neighborhood seems to be very concerned. Of course I always check first and if the server isn't sure they go and check on it for me. Thumbs up to them becuase most aren't like that. I have never had a problem with Arby's either by I think they serve some products with nuts Mainly desserts.
Are Applebees franchised like Burger Kings' etc? I have been to our local Applebees 2 or 3 times with DS with no problem (yes we asked re: peanut oil etc). There is another child on my sons' football team that is PA and his mom emphatically states that Applebees is NOT safe that they use peanut oil. Gee it never stops does it. I can not stand Applebee's at all. I know they have the oriental salad and desserts with nuts in the ones near me. Also I will NEVER EVER eat their again after finding hair in my food! Mighty disgusting and does not speak much towards proper cleaning and cross contamination issues!

We love Applebees! We never order desserts, and never seem to order salads. We always stick with sandwhiches or steak. We order off the kids menu for my PA son. Jonathan loves the atmosphere and the balloon he gets when he leaves. There's a Donatos by us, but we've never ordered from there. Does anyone know about this place? I'd love to try them. We seem to stick to the same pizza places all the time (Pizza Hut & Papa John's) because of the PA. About Arby's, we too eat there all the time.
My DH and I ate at Applebee's last night. When the server presented us with the menus, she made a point of saying, "The Carmel Apple Cheesecake has walnuts even though it doesn't show them or say that in the description." I commended the server, the trainer, and the manager for this statement. I then asked a few pointed questions about the risk of cross-contamination with peanuts/nuts and sauces/salad dressing and it appeared overall that they were very aware. The manager could tell me exactly what was in their fry oil. The only thing that they didn't have covered was that they used the same ice cream scoop for the Macadamian Nut Brittle ice cream as for the rest. I pointed that out to the manager. He thanked me for this info. I think one of the things that impressed me the most was that he is not a person who deals with this on a personal basis. He believed in it without first hand experience! Stay safe! Kristi
