SAMPLE LETTER
IN SUPPORT OF FOOD ALLERGEN CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT

(Please put on your letterhead, address to your representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Dear :

As the parent of a food allergic child/a food allergic consumer, I am writing today to ask you to cosponsor Senator Edward Kennedy and U.S. Representative Nita Lowey's Food Allergen Consumer Protection Act.

Seven million Americans suffer from food allergies. Recent studies estimate that 150 Americans die each year due to the ingestion of allergenic foods. The good news is that with the government's help, many of these deaths could be prevented.

As a food-allergic consumer, I am forced to read labels for all foods each time I shop -- a tedious and timely process. Unfortunately, life is made even more difficult because ingredient statements are written for scientists, not consumers. Currently, allergens are listed on food labels using many different terms that are often difficult to understand. Furthermore, the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act exempts spices, flavorings, and certain colorings and additives from ingredient labeling requirements. This is dangerous and wrong. Many natural flavorings contain allergens and can pose a serious health threat to those susceptible to food allergies. That is why it is my hope you will cosponsor the Food Allergen Consumer Protection Act. The bill would:

We were called today to see if we could let our members know that Sen. Kennedy's food allergy bill may be voted on a week from Wednesday.
Sen. Kennedy wants to have it put to vote on July 31st so the reminder was to be sure you have called and/or faxed (which are both better than email or regular mail at this time) your senator to support the bill. He wanted to be sure you knew you could look up your senator at www.senate.gov by going to that website and putting in your state etc.

I just faxed and emailed Senator Edwards and Senator Helms from North Carolina. Thanks for the letter above. It was a real time saver. It only took me 10 minutes to do this. I encourage all other parents to do it. It is too important to put off!

As I just posted in the TAKE ACTION board, both Senators from NJ (Torricelli & Corzine) will be voting in favor of this bill.

I just got a call from Senator Helm's office of North Carolina and was disappointed to hear that they aren't even aware of this bill! My letter was the first they had heard of it. By coincidence, the man who called me has a mother who is PA. He said that it wasn't a priority for them right now. I spoke to him for about 10 minutes trying to quickly explain why it should be a priority for them and is for the families of PA individuals. He stated that they need time to investigate these issues which I encouraged him to do himself since this is obviously a family issue for him too.
I hope my fellow North Carolinians will contact Senator Helms and Senator Edwards to
encourage them to support this bill. Thanks!

Dear PattyR,
Please see the "Take Action" discussion board. Senator Edwards is on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee which is meeting on July 31 to go over the Food Allergen Consumer Protection Act. It is very important that you and your fellow North Carolinians call Senator Edwards to express your support for the bill. Thanks a bunch!
