What seeds are you staying away from?

Sunflower, salflower (spelling?), sesame, and flax seed seem to be in almost everything. There are such few cereals to purchase that I am down to 0 that do not contain one of the above seeds or their oils.
I changed from Kashi cereal because it contained sesame to energyfoods.com new granola cereal but it contains flax seed oil. Now I don't have a cereal that I am totally comfortable with. I called Cascadian Farms and they told me that at this time they would label their cereals "may contain" or "manufactured on" if there was any chance of x-contamination at all. They said that at this time, they consider their cereals safe. I guess I may switch to their cereals now.
So, who is staying away from all seeds and their oils? And if you are staying away from seeds, has your cereal and snack supply been cut in half?

For me, we only avoid sesame seeds with the hope of preventing an allergy.
I've never heard of an allergy to flax seed. Is it allegenic? Flax seed and flax seed oil is one of the healthiest food supplements out there, high in essential fatty acids. I, personally, would not avoid flax seed.
We do not avoid sunflower or safflower oils, but we do not buy sunflower seeds because most brands have a "may contain peanut" label and may be cross-contaminated with the peanut protein. If I could find a safe brand, we wouldn't avoid sunflower seeds either.
It seems that sesame has the most potential to develop into a life-threatening allergy, IMO.

My son is allergic to sesame. We avoid sesame, poppy seed, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds (but not the oil), pine nuts (not sure if that's a nut or a seed, but anyway...).
I sort of gritted my teeth and let him eat foods with sunflower oil and safflower oil (is it the same thing? I dunno) and he was fine, so we don't avoid them. I guess that means he's not allergic to sunflower seeds, but I still don't want him to eat the seeds even though he may consume a small amount of the oil now and then in various foods.
I don't want to be more restrictive than absolutely necessary. I don't know if I've seen flax seed oil in anything he's eaten, but if I did, I'd let him have it. Whenever we try something new it's under ideal circumstances--I'm aware and ready and able to keep an eye on him in case of any reaction.
I don't know if that's any help at all. I'm just sort of feeling my way along with this and so far so good. My own personal philosophy is that our food choices are already limited enough and I don't want to avoid more foods than I absolutely have to. I know some people see it differently and they prefer to avoid more foods and that's fine. I understand why some prefer that approach, but now that my son is 7 and his allergies seem under control and he can let me know if something bothers him, I am branching out more.

Danielle, I remember asking a similar question about whether anyone else was "weird" about seeds like I was or not. My son is solely PA.
Yet, seeds seemed to bug me or worry me. I don't buy sunflower seeds to cook with anymore, simply because of the "may contain" label that Cayley's Mom mentioned and also because I have this *thing* about seeds. And yet, we have been okay eating sesame and poppy seeds.
Flax seed, despite it's health benefits, I just don't like the look of, if that makes any sense and I refuse to buy anything with flax seed in it. Also, I've noticed that my PA son will eat say 7 Grain Bread but not 12 Grain and certainly not Flax Seed.
For vegetable oils to cook with, I buy canola oil or olive oil.
I do buy non-shelled sunflower seeds for our birdfeeders (not mixed bird seed) and although I do allow my PA son to help me fill the bird feeders if he wants, I always make sure he comes in and washes his hands.
So, I guess I still have this *thing* about seeds.
I'll see if I can find that old thread. I know some people hate old threads being re-raised, but I think it explains my weirdness at least, better.
And I don't think my weirdness has changed.

I definitely avoid sesame seeds - but I do react severely to them.
At first I tried to avoid all seeds, then just all seeds that started with an "s". [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/eek.gif[/img] Yes, I do know how weird that sounds, but I never before heard of a "safflour" (or is it safflower). I know lots of foods are *hidden* under other names, so I just avoided all "s" seeds.
Now, usually I use canola or olive oil. Occasionally vegetable oil (apparently if peanut is used at all in Canada it has to be listed).
But I don't eat or cook with any actual seeds.

According to a recent RAST test my son has developed a sensitivity to sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds. He ate eaten poppy seeds a few times several years ago w/o a reaction, but we have just generally avoided seeds of all kinds when I got the impression that a lot of peanut allergic folks were also sensitive to sesame. He handled sunflower seeds a few years ago to plant them, w/o a reaction, but has never eaten them. I do not recall ever giving him anything with sesame, but we do eat pepperidge farm white breads and Shaw's french bread which may run a risk of cross contamination with sesame (????). So we avoid seeds in general. But do eat foods w/sunflower oil since he has never reacted to eat.

My daugther had a reaction once to a shampoo that containted sunflower seed (oil or something?) in it. She broke out in hives after using it but when they tested her she didn't react so they said she wasn't allergic. I atill avoid the actual seed but not sunflower seed oil in chips and goldfish. I avoid all other seeds as well just b/c I am paranoid. The doctors say that very few people are allergic to seeds but they also say not many are allergic to chicken and I am highly allergic to chicken so I sometimes take what they say with a grain of salt and trust my instincts with my daughter. Better to be safe and avoid any reactions.
