what can i send for snack? help!

Okay here's the deal. Mom of two, we are all allergic to so much. My oldest suffers from so many allergies that school is sometimes a challege due to side effects of asthma etc. I have a sever food allergy to peppers. Know all about standing around minding my own buisness when peppers are being grilled,fried or in some way allowed into the surrounding air. I have learned some pretty strange coping mechanisms. INclulding making sure we have something for me to eat if we end up at someones house where peppers are being served. my oldest is allergic to everything from dairy fats, lactose, wheat (really badly to apples)very mildly to peanuts. BOY CAN I READ LAbles.

OUr allergies are not the problem. My younger son is a picky eater. HE has a child in his class with a peanut allergy. My sweet baby lives on it. If we banned everything someone in this house is violently allergic to we would eat only chicken, beef and water. (the chemicals in the h20 give my brother hives) I spent a lot of time adding and subtracting things as neccessary. Clean implements are a must.

So his favorite snack peanut butter crackers is out. He has deceided that yougart is gross, and so is milk that comes in the a sort of milk box thing, besides that has lactose and he can't have it everyday. Thermos are frowned on and don't keep the milk cold enough for him and if I add ice, it is too watered down.

I gave up today and sent a few potato chips and a juice box. These were thrown out because they were not labeled. We can not send in anything that is not prepackaged with the ingredients. (A little expensive for everyday)

We also have a family history of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar- regular protien snack help keep in blood sugar levels even. Child stays happy and attentive. Sugar and carbs cause insulin levels to rise and blood sugar to plumit. I promise you this is not a child you want to be with)

I need to have some protien snacks that can be eaten in class, that are recognisable to the teacher as safe for PA child, MOST IMPORTANT That my little guy will eat. HE loves fruits and veggies that are fresh, not much protien there, do you know how much sugar there is in a grape?

I really want to avoid him having to go else where to eat. the other class also has PA kid. IT is only this 1 grade that is so blessed, go figure. I don't want my son embarassed either. He was really upset in kindergarden when something he had for snack was packed by an unwitting dad and he had to eat in the hall. for the last two years he was not in the same room with the PA kids. So I did not have to deal with it. Please if you have any ideas let me know. I figure this must be the place to find the answer.

PS. is coconut oil on the list?

Since your child has hypoglycemia/ insulin problems/ food allergies/ food aversions and these present a problem in school, your best bet would be to have these medical problems documented by his allergist or pediatrician. Call your school and let them know you need a 504 meeting. Your child can have a health plan or 504 which will ensure your child can go to school without being endangered.

You should work this out with your child's school. The people on this board are experts on peanut allergy, and to ensure our child's safety at school, most of us have a health plan or IEP or 504 in place. You should do the same.

It is a lot of work and requires significant input from your allergist/pediatrician, but if it's important to your child's well-being, I'm sure you'll find it worthwhile to invest the time and research to figure it all out.

Have you ever tried NoNuts Peabutter? I swear you can't tell the difference. The company will send you a free jar if you contact them, their info is under the "products for our community" board. Also there is a pumpkin seed butter that is very good, very green though so that may not appeal to him. It does however run the risk of X-contam with Walnut, but I eat it around ds with no problems (rarely, mostly I take it to work).

One serving of raisin bran has the same amount of protein as PB. Other bran cereals also have a lot of protein, such as: Cracklin Oat Bran and Quaker Oat Squares. You can also make a "trail mix" by mixing different cereals, you can even add raisins, chocolate chip, etc.

One bagel has the same amount of protein as PB. Kids also like the mini bagels.

You can find pizza bagels in the freezer section. Cook them the night before. Kids like them cold.

Cheese Nip / Cheese-It Crackers, Cheddar Goldfish, Animal Crackers all have protein

Teddy Grahams, Graham Crackers, Honey Maid Graham Sticks all have protein.

Gogurt that is frozen the night before is yummy.

Individual pudding cups.

Whole wheat rolls.

Bran muffins, Raisin Bran Muffins, Apple Bran Muffins.

Cheese sticks: white, yellow, or twisted.

Kraft makes individual packs of breadsticks and cheese dip.

You could try freezing the milk box

Dannon Sprinklins yogurt that comes with its own sprinkles. I think there is a soy yogurt availabl.

Celery and spreadable cheese or soy nut butter (label the container clearly)

Bean dip and baked tortilla chips, or whole wheat tortilla rollups with bean dip.

You can also send whatever food your child eats at other meals.

Careful with Cheese Nip / Cheese-It Crackers, some have peanut oil in it!

What about cheese slices with crackers (bring a box of Club crackers so the teacher can read the label and see they are safe). He could make "sandwiches" with the cheese and crackers. Another suggestion is the small packages of chips, Doritos and Fritos. Not very healthy, but at least they are labeled. Another suggestion: lunchmeat or ring bologna.
