Werther\'s Original

Just wondering if anyone knows if these are safe? or Has a package and could check the ingredient list?

At school, my daughter had 3 wishes, one wish to have candy at school -- the principal gave her a Werther's Original but told her to check with her mom before eating it. I have had them before but don't buy them regularly and am not sure if the are peanut/nut free.

I think they say "may contain peanuts"

I am not certain.. I will check in the store tomorrow.

Jeez, Codyman, I was going to say that I think they are safe. I'm almost positive that my children have had them and they wouldn't have if there was a "may contain" warning on them. Having said that, I don't buy a lot of bagged candy and wasn't really able to buy candy until erik told me about Dare gum drops, ju jubes, jelly beans that were PA safe (I don't think all of them are, but not sure about that anymore either).

But darnit, I'm thinking for some reason that these are safe.

Just ran a quick search of the Manufacturers part of the board and I can't find a single post about Werther's.

I am almost positive they have a "may contain" waring on them. My son is not allowed to eat them...I think the "may contain" is the reason.

Maybe it's been one of those candies that we thought we would like to try (and I do know I have eaten them when the kids aren't around), but have looked at the package and said "darnit".

Their website is:-

They have a Contact Us link. Also, I notice they also make Toffifee (?) and I know we can't buy those, so.....

Sorry, me again, so yes, I've gone manic!

Codyman, erik, and I are all responding Canadian specific. notnutty is responding American specific.

Now I'm off to watch Without a Trace. I have a grueling field trip tomorrow (well, it *could* be worse, it could be that Frink Center they sent us to three times a year every year in Belleville), so I can't even pop on tomorrow. And the grocery store is closed so I can't call and check.

I buy these for my mother all the time with strict instructions not to share them with my PA daughter as they do have a "may contain" warning on the package.

We have Werther's Original in our office as hand out candies. They state:

"ALLERGY INFORMATION: MANUFACTURED IN A FACILITY THAT PROCESSES HAZELNUTS AND OTHER NUTS."

Also, just noticed they state "Made in Germany" - never realized that.

Unfortunately, they addded a new (peanut containing) product a few yaers ago, and changed the label at that time to "may contain." My daughter used to love them, but now I won't buy them for because my son can't have it (although she gets an occasional one from someone giving out candy).

Thanks for the replies.

Last night, I did an internet search but there is no ingredient list on their web site and my daughter wanted to know asap if she could have it. I'll have to give her another candy to have. Next school year, I'll also have to provide the principal with safe candies. The classroom teacher has some but this was a special letter or something (DD was more concerned with eating the candy than telling me the story) that she wrote and read to the principal, that stated 3 wishes she would like. I am not sure of her other wishes but am pretty sure they were fulfilled.

Thanks again for the replies!

Canadian specific - I still have to go to the store to-day so I'll try to remember to check, but it does look as though they're not okay. I know I've never bought a bag so there must be a reason (although, as I said, I don't buy a lot of bagged candy).

Don't they have the chocolate Werther's too? And I know they have the soft ones like caramels, which again, we haven't tried either of those so there must be a reason.

It bothers me that I can't automatically remember.

Codyman, I checked the store tonight. The regular Werther's Original do read:-

"ALLERGY INFORMATION: MANUFACTURED IN A FACILITY THAT PROCESSES HAZELNUTS AND OTHER NUTS."

Strangely enough, the new Werther's Original, No Sugar, do not have a warning, but they are made in Germany and that is very clearly labeled.

WOW!! I have bought these in the past almost weekly and Cameron has always ate them without a problem...but it's one of those things that I have bought regularly and didn't check the package regularly!!

Guess it goes to show you, you can't ever get comfortable with something you buy all the time...though I (personally) would probably still give Cameron one.

Cindy: Thanks for checking!

Codyman, yes, can I tell you how difficult it was for me to check a bag of candy in the candy aisle of the grocery store with two children with me?

Cam's Mom, your labeling *may* be different in America, but a lot of the posts in this thread were by Americans as well saying there is a "may contain" warning.

Oh, and Codyman, I tried to find either the soft caramel like ones or the chocolate filled ones but our grocery store only carried the two I posted about.

Interestingly enough, to-day, when I went into Shopper's Drug Mart (where Ember had a wonderful time with the make-up testers ), Werther's were on sale for $1.99 and I just thought, didn't even look, but man, huge bummer.

csc: two children in the candy asile with you, I can imagine!

If you have sometime by yourself and can try Werther's Original, they are very good. I like the hard caramel ones ... the "original" ones, I believe. I haven't had them in a long long time.

On Jun 5, 2005

Codyman, I've had the Werther's Original. That's why initially I thought they were "safe" because I've had them. Now, years ago, in Stayner, I used to have a bag of scotch mints just for myself that were "may contain" but I gave that habit up.

I did ask Jesse the other night if he had tried Werther's Original and he said that yes, he had. I asked him about the circumstances - if I had bought them, etc. No, I hadn't bought them, he has only tried them a couple of times, and let's just say he was given them by someone that either forgot to read the label and/or *should* know better and who I now have to speak with about this.

But I told him that night that there was discussion on the board and it was a good thing that he was with me in the candy aisle because he saw the warning himself, and he'll be able to tell anyone/everyone that they're not okay for him.

I was fairly sure that the kids had tried them but couldn't remember the circumstances. I know that I have never bought a bag but I remember us all having them. Anyway, now I know how and thankfully nothing happened those times and now we know not to accept them again. I'm still shocked by the person who did okay them, but whatever.

Best wishes!

Hi Cindy,

The Werthers original never had a peanut warning in the past. I have eaten them as well.

I think it is only within the last year or so that the warning was added, so when you lived in Stayner they probably were safe.
