Anyone else around here been asked to join their school's "Wellness Committee"? Or have you heard of such a thing? What does this committee do? Who do they report to? I go to our district's Superintendent's offices for my first meeting next week - just wondering what I should expect?

I'm going to go Google it and see what I come up with.

Is this something new that schools are mandated to do?
Our school just started forming one too but didn't make it public knowledge. They choose what parent, teacher, etc. to be on it.

From what I found on my search the other day: "The Idaho Falls district wellness committee is the result of a federal law that directs all school districts to have a policy in place by the end of June. But the law has no teeth in it; nothing happens if districts don't come up with a plan."
I have no idea if this author (Anne Wallace Allen, Associated Press Writer) knew what she was talking about or not, but that was her take on it.
Eugene, Oregon put their entire proposal on the web for all to see -
http://www.4j.lane.edu/board/committees/wellness/wellness_draft.html
I printed it out to look through before I go to my first meeting tomorrow night. I'll need to commit it to memory, because I don't want to admit that it came from Eugene - a community known for its liberalism, considering I'll be talking about it in Idaho - a place known for it's conservatism. Even so, I thought it might give me some ideas on areas that I would like to enter into here as well. The main point that jumped out at me was that they are trying to eliminate all foods as academic rewards - Wouldn't that be just TOO COOL!
I'll come back and post my feelings about how the meeting went tomorrow afternoon or evening. I know that 2 or 3 of the cafeteria ladies, the janitor, and 1 or 2 teachers plus me from our school will be there, and I'm not sure whether other schools will be at the same meeting, or if we're going it alone at each school.
I'll know more tomorrow!

Our district gave lip service to the mandate. They created and passed a bare-bone policy (4 sentences I think) just in time to comply with the mandate's deadline. Now they've put out a call requesting parent volunteers. I volunteered.
Would anyone mind posting their district's policy?
MommaBear, SpudBerry, anyone else on their SD's Wellness Committee? Momcat? Didn't I read you are?

I've been invited to be on our District's Wellness committee. Our district also passed a bare-bones policy just in time, and without parental input.
I am starting a health and wellness committee for our school's PTA. I'm pitching the idea to them tomorrow, wish me luck!

not sure if this is the be all end all interpretation, but I can understand:
quote:
"Students with certain special needs are exempt from complying with the policy."
